lizzy- I actually see that you had read the After PIR.

Yes, ask your Sailor where drop off and pick up will be at "A" school GL. It could be different each day. He will know.

But the one thing you can mostly put money on is that you will be able to hug the heck out of him on the PIR floor, visit briefly and then he will be off to move over to Naval Station Great Lakes. This could take 3-5 hours. Make sure he has a working phone card so that he can call you when he is ready to go! He'll let you know when he can have his cell phone and any other items. (Why don't I know that yet?! LOL I am sure that dianne does...and Betsy and Sandy!)

Naval Station Great Lakes is spread out. RTC IS seperate from The Main Base. "A" school is on the main base. Your Sailor will know where to go! Just like Alwaysincognito said!

No checking in and out...just need your Gov ID and he will need to have his ready each time he goes back at night.

Alwaysincognito- stick around! ANY support from a veteran is helpful! Just becasue there is a parking structure or they change drop off (who knows-it could be different from mine now! You know the military!) doesn't mean you don't have something to offer!

incognito:  You've been helpful too.  Always good to hear everyone's experience.  Stay with us and watch all the "i'm a Sailor" calls come in and remember the day!

I am unfamilar with the "parking structures" like "awnings" of some sort?  I knew several who liked to use the NEX as a drop off and pick up point so they could shop too. LOL  I was allowed to park in the church parking lot each time.  I guess things change a lot in a year. Thats why its SO good for those who just experienced it to stick around and help guide the ones who are about to go.  I guess after a years time, my info is very much outdated. So I will leave it all in the capable hands of those who just had a Sailor PIR.  I just wanted to come back and pay it all forward. And this time of year IS special to me because its a ONE yr anniversary of PIR.  Lots of wonderful memories!!!   Best of luck to all of you and I know you'll LOVE seeing your brand new Sailors. Soo exciting!

Also, when we PIR'd...we parked in the parking structures...leads right into the building for PIR.
Then when I brought my Sailor back that first night...it was allowed to drop him off on the parking lot connected to the NEX, photo lab RTC. buildings...which is before the church.
After that, each day I was directed to the same parking structure to park and had to walk all the way across to the NEX to pick him up.
He was NOT a GL "A" schooler. This was at RTC...needed ID and gate pass each day.

fireteam- wow thats a very informative discussion.  So much has changed in a year. Did you know they moved Corps school down to San Antonio since last year?  Anyway, I really liked how you condensed it down to the basics for a quick cut and paste somewhere else if the topic comes up again.  Very well and concisely written.   Thanks!

Lizzy-bumped up my "After PIR..." Discussion...give it a read and see if that answers some of your questions. Be home soon!

I know, it was more confusing to me before I experienced than after. What I found was I was stressing over stuff that was really easy and just sort of takes care of itself.  I worried a lot about if my sailor would know where to meet me and the truth is the way its all designed, it just does work out.  As long as they know your number everything can be arranged.  The church being where it is there was no way I was going to accidently loose my kid.  LOL  I picked her up and dropped her off there and it was just SO easy.  I also realized that my sailor already knows just exactly what they need to do and when and where they need to be and they WILL make it happen, one way or the other.
