Just back from PIR- had a unbelievable time. Our sailor is so happy and settled. Truly a gift to spend time with him. We stayed at Residence Inn and it was very comfortable. They even had a heavy snack when we arrived on Thursday evening. Meet n greet was great fun-so don't miss that! We checked out the ride to the base- only 4 minutes. We were in carline Friday morning at 6:15 AM and it was already 3 blocks long. (reminded me of his pre-K days) The line moves really fast once it starts moving. The walk from the parking garage to the Drill hall is short- and you enter though a beautiful exhibit. It is very impressive. We sat on the upper deck and had a fantastic view- Someone wrote that a while ago on this site and I remembered. You may want to ask what the view was like from the bottom. Our Sailor was toward the back of the division so we opted to go high to look down and see his face. We borrowed a camera with a telefoto lens to be sure we were looking at the right Sailor. It would be helpful to know where in the division your Sailor marches. I would bring binoculars if I had a do-over. We only found out is orders after PIR so we were flexible about how to spend his time. Went to Chicago and had a fantastic time- walked to Navy Pier and Weber's Grill for lunch. It was a beautiful day. He even had time to chill at our hotel before going back to base.
Saturday morning at 4AM, we drove to O'Hare. We were able to get gate passes and sit with him till he boarded. This was a wonderful time as well.
I am happy to answer any questions....
I am so on edge waiting to see my son. Not hearing his voice from that first and only real phone call is making me nuts! Anyone else in this boat with me?

That is great lizzy, that is what I did lol. Be sure and post a pic and show off your talents :-) I would love to see them.
If there are any scrapbookeres in this group please check out the scrapbooking group on this site. There are lots of great ideas on that group page. :-)
I suggest renting a car if possible. Yes, taxis to hotel are expensive and they are kind of expensive around GL too. For those who want a "shuttle' service, call "Sarge", retired military, who is very kind to all of the Navy families. Great reports on him.
