We lost a sailor last week.  Thought you all may want to read the beautiful tribute by his father:

PAWEBDOCTOR:  What do you mean by "a visit home"?  Not terminology I've read about before.

First time back here since leaving for PIR.  What a truly awesome experience! Then getting to see my sailor!  He looked wonderful!  Pride and confidence exuded from him.  His entire demeanor was different.  We got to enjoy a terrific weekend together.  Even though I hated to leave, I felt like I was leaving a very capable man! Knowing that he'll go from A school to a visit home... makes it tolerable!  Can't wait to see him again!!!

Congratulations to all graduates and their families!!!  And, thank you to all the sailors for their commitment, dedication of service... you will forever be in our prayers!!!

My son PIRed on 7/29 and I do miss the letters...something you can hold, save and read over and over again.  Wonderful being able to text and talk to him but I do miss stalking the mailman. LOL

We stayed at the Navy Lodge wich was overbooked when we got there. They were having issues with a couple other rooms. My husband and I were there with my mom and mother-in-law. Navy lodge wanted us to take only one room instead of the 2 that we had reserved. My husband didn't like that idea because he gets up at night to go to the bathroom and he sleeps in the buff. Plus it would be a hassle to all try to get ready for PIR at the same time in the morning. They ended up upgrading one of our rooms and it was nice and roomy and my husband was happy he didn't have to sleep with the grandma's..Perfect space for when we later brought our son back for visiting with us and grandparents.

The PIR Ceremony was great! I had a hard time spotting my son in his division. I ended up using the zoom on the video camera to find him and even then I could barely recognize him. He had lost 40 lbs!!! He looked good even though he wasn't fat when he went in. He is slim now! I think my favorite part of the graduation was when they sang "Anchors Away" I loved it!! I was glad I knew certain things and was able to explain to my family about the 'body snatchers" and the SR's that were up in the bleachers. I was happy to see that so many were able to graduate at the last minute. I guess there were many more than the ones we heard about on N4M. I was happy to see they made it. I also felt bad for those that didn't and I hope they make it through soon. I hope they didn't feel too terribly disappointed.

I did go to the NEX and my son bought us some t-shirts, a baseball cap and a couple coffee mugs with his money left on his card. He said it was only good there and he didn't want it to go to waste. Then we went and ordered the DVD. My mom almost took a picture on the outside grounds. I tried to stop her and she wasn't listening or understanding . I said stop, stop, stop louder and louder until I yelled it. At that point we had people looking at us. Fortunately, she didn't take the picture and we didn't have to lose a camera or delete any pictures.

We went back to the hotel were we all visited for several hours. The day flew by. My son did most of the talking. He told us about boot camp, navy history and his next schooling. He was so interesting. We all enjoyed every minute of our time together. We had an early dinner before returning him to the base. We took him back at 7;00 because he wanted to be sure not to be late. We did go to the airport in the morning but only to drop off his laptop and phone to him. He got there a little after 7 and his plane was leaving at 9:30. He still needed to check his luggage and get to his gate. It was hard to say goodbye after such a short visit.

I am proud of my boy!
