OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Good afternoon! Sorry I haven't been on much, I have been spending time with my son who has been home on leave. He is only home for a few more days before he is off to Japan for four years.

Ellen, I don't have any suggestions on brand of watch, but I do recommend waterproof (of course), and black or silver in color. While any sailor can wear a gold watch, many won't want to and don't due to the fact that gold is generally for officers only.

Bradford Exchange has a pretty Navy watch.

Good morning all and happy Independence Day! I was reading the doc here with ideas for PIR / graduation gifts and I think a watch will be a great gift for my son. I've been browsing around the Internet for one but want to make sure I get a good one thats usable. He's going in as a FN so we don't know what he'll be doing yet or where. Any suggestions? Makers and models. I would really appreciate any direction if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks!
