~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

debnavysailormom - That is a qualifying event, and they should honor your paperwork.  You may have to bypass your hr/benefits department and go straight to the insurance company!  (When I did insurance, I certainly accepted those papers.)

I must chime in and agree with Sierrascrapper-wish we had the binoculars- i couldn't afford them but if you have them it helps!! we never could find my son! half the sailors and families had left the drill hall and we were still looking for him from the bleachers! he's changed so much i didn't recognize. He knew what he wanted to do he wanted Giordano's because Chief had told them they had to have the deep dish pizza. We decided to go to Gurnee Mills Outlet mall and many many sailors were there with their families. he could walk and talk with us and phone his friends and let them know he graduated. He entertained us in the car with BC stories we laughed til we cried. He felt BC was a home away from home/family except for the liberty. His one desire while at the mall was to 'get outside' so he could really look around and enjoy the sun and be able to just look around! His other desire was to take us to the Navy exchange (not on base) that was larger because he wanted to buy us something! It ended up he got our dogs a big box of Milk bones that I could take back ;)

I found our hotel Quality Inn did have shuttle service to PIR, but you have to leave really really early. I went down at 7am and they said all the shuttles were gone. So definitely reserve ahead. Also the hotels, at least ours, had a glass-covered bulletin board with the new sailors pictures. They change them out as parents/family give them a picture wallet size to put in of their sailor. Just something to consider.

Hi Ladies!  I have an after PIR question.  My company is being difficult in removing my son from my healthcare and dental coverage at work.  They act like he is in a civilian job and should have received cards and a letter about his coverage to prove he has it.  How did other moms remove their dependent son/daughter from their coverage?  I do have the documentation he gave me at the swearing in that proves he is in navy and listed me as his beneficiary.  I'm thinking that should suffice.  Any recommendations welcome!

ONE BIG CHANGE IN INFORMATION for future PIR groups. The Navy Lodge just started shuttle service to PIR starting with our PIR group.  You need to sign up at the front desk.  Such a great service for future guests!

WHEW what a whirlwind of a weekend!  Thank you so very much to our Admins!  You all were absolutely AMAZING in helping us along through this journey.  I feel that all the information you gave out was SPOT on.  No unexpected surprises for us.  I also want to thank all of you in our PIR group.  You were so wonderful and we all survived together. All of us worked together as a team to come through for those who needed it and that is so AWESOME!

We had a GREAT time with our Sailor.  My biggest piece of advice to future PIR groups would be to be as flexible with your Sailor as possible on PIR day, but also have a plan. These past 8 weeks they have been TOLD what to do for everything.  They have trouble deciding what they want to do for themselves by the time they have PIR.  We made plans to go downtown on the Metra and take in a few sites along with some famous Geno's East Pizza.  We asked him what he wanted to do most and told him that we were more than happy to just go to the hotel room and let him sleep and take a shower.  But he was all up for having a time on the town.  We enjoyed it very much and it was an adventure! The time we spent on the Metra Train to Chicago was relaxing and we were able to talk and catch up on all the BC stories.  Getting around in downtown Chicago on foot was pretty easy.  We walked from the OTC down to Millenium Park and enjoyed the sites along the way.  Also...BRING GOOD WALKING SHOES for getting around in Chicago.  I made the mistake of wearing the same shoes I wore to PIR and I regretted it.  I almost stopped to buy a new pair of shoes to help, but we were in a time crunch so I just dealt with it, however my feet were killing me the rest of the weekend because of it.

One other piece of advice...GO to Sarge's M&G and STAY until the VERY END.  Sarge's gives out all the best information at the end of the night.  Most of the people had left by the time he gave out all the tips and tricks.  You won't regret staying a little longer to find out the information.

Also...BRING A SMALL PAIR OF BINOCULARS.  My son was in the very last row of his division so it was easier to spot him with the binoculars.

Now it is time for you all to "grade us" on our info to you during Bootcamp!  Please let us know where we were correct, where we may have been mistaken and where there may be new info we need to know about so we can share proper info with the next groups!  Thanks so much and congrats to your sailors!
