OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

You are very welcome, ottershort.  That is what we are here for!  These first few weeks in Bootcamp are rough on the families too and we are here to help!  :-)

Thank you so much! Yes I am missing that whole page with the password and list of guests. Unfortunately that is the page she could have written a note at the bottom also :-( I will write to her and let her know I did not get that information. Thanks so much for your help!!!

@Polevaultmom2013 Yes this is the first one to leave the nest. THANK GOD the next one to leave is only 9 so I do not have to deal with this again for a while.

@JakesMom When he called Saturday I could already hear a change in him. He is so grown now and the teenaged surly mouthyness has gone. It was all yes ma'am and no ma'am. I cannot wait to see him again. His baby sister (21 months old (yes my younguns' are spaced WAY out) misses him so bad. She would go and climb in the bed with him in the mornings for snuggs with Bubby. She talks to him on her pretend phone and if she finds something of his she says "Bubby!" and loves on it. He left dog tags with the Lord's Prayer engraved on them hanging on her wall at the foot of her crib. My eldest daughter almost hyperventilated she was crying so hard when we left him at DEP to go to MEP.

Lucky for me I have family in Chicago so I am going a week and a half before graduation. I do not have to worry about the hotel issues that yall are fretting over.

The password is not needed until 11 days before PIR when you can download your gate pass.  This is the pass that will allow you to drive onto the base.  If you use a shuttle, you won't need the pass unless you are dropping off your SR back at RTC that night after Liberty.

Comment by diannep on July 30, 2013 at 11:14am

The guest lists will be updated by the SRs a week or so before PIR.  Those are the lists that will be at the security gates.  So there is no worry if you don't have a list yet.

If the password was not written in by your SR, please write him/her and ask for it.

Comment by NavyMAMom on July 30, 2013 at 11:06am

you are missing the bottom (front) of the 2nd page and the back of the 2nd page. Contact your SR - copy machine malfunction and they didn't catch it.

Comment by ottershort2 on July 30, 2013 at 11:02am

my letter starts with dear Mom signed by John Dye second page is her address and her graduation date about a third of the way down then the 3rd page says if you are utilizing a GPS please the this address in nad more informatino of Frequently asked questions and transfer from recruite to training compound then Navy Fleet and Family support service at the bottom. I see nothing about people of the list or a password?? Anyone else having this issue?

@adm402 I'm sure there will be good days and bad days.  This is the first time that I have ever had to deal with this.  I know that it's hard.  But know that you aren't alone.  And you SR is growing and learning and will be even more amazing to you when this is done. (hugs)

Comment by diannep on July 30, 2013 at 10:58am

Not true, NavyMAMom, although in the past, SRs would put their buddy's family members' names on their lists if their lists had space.  That is not allowed anymore.
