OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

So true, Bugsmum:  You just never know "who" you are talking to over the internet!

Comment by Lynn on July 29, 2013 at 5:23pm

My SR called on Saturday his PIR is 9/13/13

he is ship 13 division 348. When he called he sound really good. He was ready to really get started.

Comment by Bugsmum on July 29, 2013 at 5:18pm

That is great advice @diannep. I noticed a weird name added last night to the main FB group for the 09-13-13 PIR date that made me wonder. :/

Comment by diannep on July 29, 2013 at 5:13pm

On the FB groups....just remember....closed or not, you really don't know who you are letting in (i.e., family/friends of your SR's RDCs)....so just don't post anything on there that you wouldn't here on this site.  When in doubt, please private message on FB to each other.  Also, remember the last names are disclosed on FB....so what you say can be more connected to your SR for any "prying eyes."  Not posting this to scare you....but just be cautious.  Social Media sites and the military have a love-hate relationship and groups have been closed down before for not practicing OPSEC!

Please stay on this group too as this is where we will be posting lots of info before PIR!  Ask your questions here too!

Finally got my letter today.  My sr is Ship 11 division 344 with his PIR on 9/13.  Was so excited to hear from him.  Now to start looking for that airfare.

Got my box today at my PO BOX :-)  Yeah!!  It took a little longer because it came by regular postal service, just in case anyone else was waiting on a box coming to a PO BOX.  Have a great day everyone!!
