~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

diannep, My son's pant legs were rolled up when they arrived home in his box of belongings. I had questioned him why that was. He finally explained it to me last night. Oh my goodness! Sometimes difficult for a Mother to hear these things. LOL

williewish:  Oh, ok.  We used our AAA rate at Residence when up there 4.5 yrs ago.  Good to know that it is comparable to the Navy Grad rate!

Yes, I hear ya on the "what to expect" speech from your veteran hubby (thank him for his service!) and the actual experience!  My son, a former class clown, found out real quick when he was there that class clowns were not welcome!  He told me once, his RDC as in his ear, screaming so loud that his ear drum hurt, and was spitting as he yelled!  GROSS!  HA!  But he learned!

ConnorsMom:  Yep, happens in every PIR group.  There are always some who feel this is more like summer camp and it takes a while to get them working hard.  But either they will be asmoed (setback), discharged, or they finally get it together!  Your SR and his other shipmates may be receiving lots if IT (Intensive Training, used for punishment) because of the disobedient SRs, but it all works out.  You will see how well they function together as a division at PIR....the RDCs (their bosses!) know what they are doing!

If anyone receives info from their SR that if the family stays at Navy Lodge, the sailor cannot visit there....this is not true.  Not sure which RDCs are misdirected in this info, but I checked with Brian Walsh at Public Relations, RTC, and he said not true.  It is possible that the misinformation is coming from the fact that those new sailors staying in GL for A School, all who will move over there right after PIR, must get a special chit in order to visit family staying at Navy GATEWAY( not Lodge) which is located on A School base.  The students already in school on the A School base are not allowed to visit the Gateway without permission.  There is usually no problem in a new sailor obtaining this special chit to visit family staying at the Gateway during PIR weekend (Gateway guests require security clearance from the hotel at least 30 days before PIR, so if anyone wants to stay there, you need to keep this in mind).  Navy LODGE has no rules like this.  It is located about a mile from RTC, off base, in the housing section.  Navy Lodge only requires that you book the reservation in your sailor's name, if you don't have military ID yourself.  Your sailor will need to come by the front desk sometime after PIR to confirm, not a big deal.  If anyone has already booked the Lodge in their own name, not a problem....Navy Lodge said they will change it to your sailor's name when you check in.

Remember, it is not too early to book your hotels if booking directly.  There is usually no penalty if you need to cancel as long as it is done either by the day before or day of PIR.  If booking through a travel discount site, you need to check their rules on changes/cancellations.

diannep, Thank you for info. I have two rooms booked at the Courtyard. I have one room using the Naval discount and one room using my AAA rate. They are comparable. My rooms at The Holiday Inn are both under the AAA rate. Also, my husband is a Navy Vietnam Vet. He told our son over and over again what to somewhat expect but, until you are actually there experiencing it....

MonicaF:  what williewish said in her post is what Lala meant.  They "change" to the winter uniforms....this yr, it will be Oct. 6th so the Oct 10th PIR group will be in Blues.  The PIR date will NOT change for this group....however, it may change for an individual SR who is delayed for any reason.  If that happens, you will be notified in a phone call by your SR.

MonicaF:  Many like to decorate the hotel room door to honor their new sailors.  You may check with your hotel to see if there is a problem with this (there usually is not).  They do not allow any posters, signs, etc in PIR Hall because they block others' view of the ceremony, so decorating the hotel room is the next best thing!

Wisdom Teeth Removal is probably the most common procedure done at Bootcamp.  They are good about giving the SRs SIQ time (Sick in Quarters) for a couple of days...try not to worry!  If they think that the wisdom teeth may pose any problem in the future (like on deployment), they will take them now.  They don't take everyone's though....some are ok....some may be watched and have them out later in A School.

Comment by diannep on August 24, 2014 at 10:37am

Remind your SRs in your letters that the first part of Bootcamp is the Breaking Down part....they must get all of the SRs on the same page....hard with so many from all different backgrounds, ages, goals, personalities, etc....so there is lots of yelling going on, and demeaning comments made....very hard.  Assure your SRs in your letters that this is normal, and by mid-training, they will find that the RDCs are much more supportive and encouraging as they build them back up, Navy-style!  This is all part of the plan, but it isn't easy!

Comment by diannep on August 24, 2014 at 10:35am

Charity:  Yep, most of them get sick.  My son is one who never gets sick either, and when he was at Bootcamp, he did also.  My theory is that they are bombarded with vaccinations when they arrive, all at once, which temporarily lowers their immune systems.  Add tons of SRs in close quarters, germs galore, some showing up sick already, and stress.....well, it's no wonder they get sick!  They get through it though!
