For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

For those of you looking for a special gift for your SR-soon-to-be-Sailor, I got a couple of these Challenge Coins for my Sailor daughter when she graduated PIR last year, please check out www.pirgifts.com. Challenge Coins are a military tradition. Craig, who is one of the veterans on Navy for Moms, designed the ones that are connected to the ships at RTC. The name of your SR's ship is right next to the ship number in the Discussion Forum. When you click on one of the coins, you will be taken to a page where there is a video about Challenge Coins. This would be a special gift especially connected to their Boot Camp days! Another really sharp coin is the Core Value one--it has cut outs and a diamond cut beveled edge. These coins are no longer given out by the Navy to the Sailors, so it is up to friends and famiily. My Sailor daughter thought her USS Hopper (Ship 03) coin was "cool."

Isan: I knew a sailor who didn't class up for almost 3 mos in Pensacola. So like CatMom said, it can take a while for some of them.

I agree with diannep that you should probably wait until your SR wife has been at A school long enough to really find out about her schedule and be able to spend a good amount of time with you. She will also have a watch schedule to consider. You wll be spending a pretty penny to fly to her A school and you will want to visit when she has the most freedom~~
Classing up (starting actual classes and training when enough Sailors have arrived in the same rating) takes anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months or even longer. My Sailor daughter classed up in 2 weeks and she went to IT a school in Pensacola. It's different for every group though In the meantime, the Navy keeps them busy with cleaning up around base and volunteering for community activities~~
Plus she will probably want to be in Phase II when she can wear civilian clothes and time restrictions won't be so limited.

Isan: Doubtful that she will start school on that Tues.....they usually have "Indoc" for a few days (orientation to the base which they do each time they arrive at a new one) and then some wait until they can "class up." My son went to A School in MS and waited about 10 days to class up. If she would have any chance at all of having time with you during that weekend, it would be visitation on base, I believe. She most likely will fly there on Saturday, but it could be on Sunday.
