Welcome to PIR 10/12/2012

OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance. Please take the time
to read the OPSEC and Community Guidelines. A quick note here: Last Names of Sailors/Recruits are not allowed on this site. If it is in your username you will need to change your username. If yours is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended. First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Navy vet:  If you count from Aug 22nd to Oct 19th,  that's 8 weeks, 2 days.  Training weeks are only 6 weeks long.  She should have just started training week 1 this week.  This is the right PIR group for her.

Comment by ellen0502 on August 31, 2012 at 9:22pm

If she went right into processing her processing days would have been 9/22-9-28, with week1 day1 being 9/29 (like you figured). She will have been there for eight weeks and 2 days at PIR.

Counting forward, BS and PIR will most likely be the same week for her and the brother division, with BS in training week 7 and PIR at the beginning of week 8. (I think I counted that right)

Training weeks are also counted at 5 days per week excluding Sat-Sun and holidays.

Does that help?

Comment by Kaulinsmom on August 31, 2012 at 9:20pm

They must count the first week they are there as part of the 8 weeks.  I have heard so many different estimates, but I am happy I get to see my recruit a week sooner than I first thought!!  My son is in Ship 11 Div 340.

Navy vet, what isn't adding up for you?

I loved the note left written on the tongue of the tennis shoes. That was super creative :-)

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on August 31, 2012 at 4:31pm

We have also had reports of SR's adding a quick note on/in the box somewhere. Either on a lid...or they slip a note in therir pants pockets. One mom found (many weeks later) that her SR had written in each tennis shoe!

The Form Letter:

First, PUT IT IN A SAFE PLACE. Do not throw it away!

It has important information on it that you will need for PIR.

1. Your SR's address. It will look like this:

SR, Last Name, First Name, Middle initial
           Ship ##, Divison ###
           Recruit Training Command
           #### Something Drive or Avenue
           Great Lakes ILL 60088-####

"Recruit Training Command" can be left off of the address. Also, if they write a ship name (all of the Ships (barracks) at RTC are named after real Naval vessels.) that does not need to be on the address either…unless your SR writes to you and says it does!

2. PIR (as in pier) date. Pass-in-Review. This is the ceremony that you attend on the last day of BC for your new Sailors.

3. Confidential password for entry with your vehicle into RTC. This is in ALL CAPS and you will need it near the end of BC to be able to access and print up your pass that allows you to enter and park your vehicle onto RTC. The link is made available 11 days before PIR. You do not need it if you are entering on foot (though you do need government ID for entry into PIR); say if a hotel shuttle, taxi drops you off or if you park outside of base.

Do not give out this password to anyone.

4. Access List. You will see that your SR has listed up to four names on the Access List. These are the loved ones that they wish to invite to PIR. These four are guaranteed access to Midway Hall with proper ID. They will finalize this list later near the end of BC...that is why you might see names like Nana, Granpy, Sis, Bro, or even the dogs! Communicate with your SR as to the proper legal name for the list.

** You are guaranteed four guests...you may also bring extras. They will wait in the Visitors Center (USS Yorktown) until 8:45 (when all guests in Midway Hall are asked to be in their seats), then space permitting extra guests will be allowed to enter and be seated. Most of the time, all extras make it in. We have heard of TG's (Training Groups) with 13 Divisions...and extra guests have made it in. When we had a  TG with 14 Divisions, RTC issued  a statement that extra guests might not make it in.

5. A note from your SR. There used to be few short lines on the very last page for your SR to write a comment...time permitting. Some squeeze it somewhere if they can. Everyone is different. My SR wrote:

SAY HI TO THE DOGS FOR ME!

In his new Navy block Upper case lettering.

In fact, your whole form letter will be in new Navy block uppercase lettering and the zero's will have a line through them.  0 Zero; O letter.

Just so you’re not surprised and wonder about it!

There will also be a brochure for hotels and services in the area.

jatwell, you should have Friday with your son (after he gets moved over to the other side) until 10pm, and all day Saturday and Sunday, from approx 6am to 10pm. He will need to be back to his ship no later than 10pm, so back to the base before 10pm.

Thanks for the number.  I would hate to get to the gate and be turned away so want to know ahead of time.  My son will be in A school in GL and from reading other comments it sounds like they will have weekend liberty (aside from sleeping) rather than the few hours I originally thought.  Is that true?  We had planned on driving home the Saturday after PIR, but would definitely want to stay longer if would be able to spend time with him.  Anyone know what time it would officially end so we can start thinking about travel plans and my hubby can ask off work?  Thanks for all the help as we are brand new to this and know nothing!

jatwell:  Hmmmm.....they want to make sure that the car is insured, etc so if you can get papers saying that, I think you would be fine.  But to make sure, call the Public Affairs Office and run this by them:  847-688-2405

Also, you can take a car seat on the shuttle if you like and take it into PIR hall.  Not a problem.

Good Morning all!
