Hi - Does anyone know how much time the SRs who are going to Pensacola FLA will have to spend with Parents on the Friday of PIR. Do they always fly out on Saturday?
I understand they leave for the airport in the wee hours of the morning on Saturday (1-2 am) but not sure. I don't know if I will have time to visit with her at the airport since there are several flights leaving for FLA before 8am. I just want to know what we can expect:) Thanks
Good morning everyone. I was in "cleaning" mode yesterday...trying to keep busy..I even vacuumed my vacuum! (I have many) Also, because of this lovely midwest weather (yuk!) ...I had to go out and buy all new weatherseal for our doors.
I am SO excited...we just booked 2 nights at the Ramada Inn so we would be even closer to Travis and the graduation. The funny thing is, we actually live about 1 hour and 15 minutes away (maybe more with traffic). It will be more convenient since it starts so early, and I want as much time with him as possible! He is going to Groton, CT for A school and we don't know how much liberty he will get.
I am hoping we can make it to the meet and greet on Thursday, but my husband has a board meeting that night and it doesn't look like he can get out of it. He is a Dean at a local college.
Diannep: I don't want to share either, whiich is why I am not going to tell my sister's family and dad that there is even a possibility of them getting in. Also, the way we look at it, (my husband, his wife, my husband and myself) is he is going to be overwhelmed, most likely homesick and a little emotional...he doesn't need to be bombarded by a bunch of people, even if they love him. Immediate family (Moms, Dads, and Sibbling) that is how we are doing it....Keeping it Small & Simple.
@Ellen. I am kind of confused about getting back onto base at 3:00. You had recommended doing that which is great, but then later you say that you can't get back onto base unless your SR was with you. Can you explain? Can we get back onto base at 3:00 without our SR? Or do you recommend that we never leave? Or is the parking pass good for all day? Sorry for so many questions, it is nice to know in advance that we will have to wait.
Also if a SR is undesignated and staying at GL is that considered "A" school? I am not sure. And do the same procedures apply?
Good morning everyone, I will be away most of the day. I have to take our college girl back to Charlotte to meet her roommate and head back to UNCW. I hope you all have a wonderful day.
Ellen0502: Thank you so much for that information!! My son will be going to A School in GL so that was so very helpful!! Especially the part about whoever checks him out has to bring him back-didn't know that and it could've caused a real problem for us!! I love this site for all the wonderful info that I gather!!
Diannep: Thank you for the info about clothing for A school! Since my son is going to be staying in GL, I was planning on bringing him a jacket, a few long sleeve shirts, hat/gloves to have because it will be so cold there. Do you think I should just wait and send it to him? What does "phasing up" mean? I thought he would be able to wear regular clothes on his 1st weekend of A school, so I was trying to get him a little something so he wouldn't always have to wear his uniform.

Morning!
Kev'smom-the way I have handled most family/friends is just letting them know there is a list of only 4 guests (my family and son's gf fill them). Less hurt feelings that way.
I'm still collecting BattleStations dates so please friend request/message them to me if you heard from your SR. Thanks!
Good Morning All!
For those of you with sailors staying in GL for A School.
Your sailor will have about an hour with you after PIR before they must report back to their ship on the RTC side. They need to pack their things and get bussed over to the TSC side to check into school. This process will take several hours.
Expect a phone call anytime from about 2:30 to 5pm on Friday afternoon, telling you they are ready to leave for the evening. They must report back to their ship no later than 10pm (this time can vary from 8pm to 10pm).
I recommend going to the visitor center early, about three o'clock, and wait for the call from them. There are things to look at while you wait, and you are already there when they call.
The best reason to get there early and wait for that call, is all of the new sailors are marched from their ships (in the opposite corner from where you are) to the gate for liberty. You can hear the cadences from quite the distance, and sometimes more than one group. They march down the street just behind the fence and then make the turn to the gate, where you can watch them march down to the street to the gate. If you have received your call saying they can leave, the anticipation as to whether your sailor is in the group you are hearing in the distance on their way, is almost as good as waiting for the door to open at PIR.
On Saturday and Sunday they will again have liberty, and be able to leave base at some point after 6am (again it can vary and they will let you know). Returning to the ship every night at approx 10pm (time can vary). You will need to check your sailor in and out of his ship each day. The person checking them out must be the one to check them back in.
You will meet them at the front gate and you have to go back to their ship with them to check them out. Keep your gate pass, it is possible that you may be allowed to drive them back to their ship to check them out and in with that pass, but they must be with you in the car. You cannot drive on to base without them.
When returning them at night, they cannot be late checking back in, if they are late they can lose their liberty for the rest of the weekend, be sure to have them back to the base no later than a half hour prior to the required check in time. If you have to walk them back (cannot drive them) it is a long way to the opposite side of the base from the gate, it will take a while to get there, and you must go back with them.
