No one else opens their mail or reads it. However, if it is bulky or looks suspicious they will make them open it in front of them. They get in trouble for musical cards so don't send those.

Good Morning everyone, I am back from Pensacola. We had a great visit with our sailor. She actually phased up to phase 3 on Sunday morning and she got to spend the night with us Sunday night. It was so nice to actually spend some time with her. The 7 hours we had with her at PIR in July had worn off long ago. We surprised her and took her best friend with us to see her. She hid in a closet. You should have seen our sailor when she saw her , she was screaming, jumping up and down, dancing, and crying all at the same time. It was priceless. :)

If anyone else wants to get ribbons to wear to PIR please let me know. It is not too late. Just send me a friend request. I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.

Hi all,
My son PIR'd on 8/27.
Mary K- From what we were told, usually the 900 divisions are the musical group. (Flags, instruments, drum line, etc...)
Allison'smom- Regarding the addresses: Same thing happened to me! The letter we got (with our son's handwriting) had an address that later changed when our son sent his 2nd letter to us. Go with what the latest letter tells you. Especially if it's the one sent by your sailor. The reason for all the changes in the beginning is that they are "settling in" so to speak. Some kids get moved around to different ships/addresses for different reasons. Example: illness, or qualifications like PFA (Physical Fitness Assessments, or they may learn that a person plays an instrument and put that sailor in a 900 division group. So again, until the dust settles....go with what your sailor sends you.
Hope this helped.
Just paying this forward. :)

Allison's recruiter gave me the Ship 2 Division 950 Ruben James address, then I got the form letter and that said Ship 06, Div 950 - so since you all had said the "form letter was it!" I used that address, then came the first letter and the return address was Ship 2, div 950 address that the recruiter gave me.... ARGHH. So there are letters floating to Ship 6 and more to Ship 2.... I wonder if that is like cyber space on the land??? Anyway the recruiter said she would eventually get the letters. Actually I sent her some home made cards. Are you saying that someone opens the mail before it is given to her??? Maybe I should not be so chatty in my letters...

I posted this earlier, but then deleted it because it had not occured yet. You know, loose lips sink ships. Anyway, it looks like some of the recruits performed in a parade today. See the link below. The drill, choirs, and band attended. Hopefully some pictures will be posted somewhere. I am so excited for the men and women that were there showing the world what they had learned!

Thanks Mary! That is interesting since #3 is signed up for sub duty. He is trying to get into the navy diving program though.

Good idea! by the way, what is boomers? This is my families first experience with the military. And now I have a son in the Navy, and his older brother is talking to a recruiter about joining the Marines.

I need a crash course.

Norfolk is ALL military. I think every branch has a base down there. There is not much else down there except Virginia Beach, which I hear is really nice. However, since it is such a large military area, I think there is alot to offer for the service men and women in regards to opportunities. Keep in mind though (for Kate if you should happen to be there also) anytime ther is military, there are also civilian jobs to support them. I know a few people who have worked for Defense contractors that have worked there.

We go down in that direction often because I love Williamsburg. It is a lovely Revolutionary town that has been restored just as it was in the 1700's. Actually, the area outside of Norfolk, meaning the whole tidewater area is lovely with alot of history.

I hope your sons get what they want. Anyone that I have known to be stationed in Norfolk has gone all over Europe and the Middle East on tours. They have facisnating stories about different countries and how much they liked them.

MaryK~ I searched my son's pockets and box for a note, but there was none. I would have been super surprized if there was. I'm glad you got something that was said so elequently written! As far as not being close to any final duty station, we are 3 hours north of Norfolk and my son wants nothing to do with the east coast. He wants San Diego or Hawaii to be in the pacific. I am thinking like you are; both are great vacation spots!
