~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.
~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.
~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.
~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Awwww.....the Palmetto Bugs....yep, they are in abundance where I live. They are so disgusting that even my dogs will gag if they get too close to them! I'm not scared of them, just disgusted by them....thankfully, we don't have them in the house often, but some people have a horrible problem with them...
Laughing at the pumping gas stories here! I have been pumping my own gas for about 35 yrs now, since that would be the only way I can get gas! Haven't seen an "attended" gas station down here in Miami in years and years! We have to be careful down here though...if you don't lock your doors as you are pumping ---in some places, someone will pull up on the other side of you by those pumps, slide out, and gently open your passenger door to steal your purse, etc. The last time it happened and was reported in the paper, the poor lady saw what was happening, tried to stop it, and the guy ran over her! Thankfully she survived with a broken leg. We we here in Miami are very vigilante (those of us long-timers) and crime aware....sad to have to live that way...
Since my 2nd son was 8 years old, he has wanted to join the military. He saved money and purchased authentic gear from our Army/Navy supplier and over the years accrued quite the collection. He played "Army" with his best friend as often as he could. Going into medicine was the ultimate goal and would "field dress" wounded stuffed animals. Although there are many aspects of the military that are distressing to us as mothers, there are also opportunities to serve others as well as their country in a meaningful way. I once asked my son why he couldn't just go to college and then medical school. His reply was that someone has to help those who are wounded in the field, why shouldn't it be him? I couldn't argue with that! I also see so many teens/young adults today who have absolutely no direction, and no desire to accomplish anything worthwhile during their time here on earth. Many are just "existing." So, while I share your heartache and desire to protect my son, I am completely at peace with his decision and am looking forward to watching it unfold. I am on other groups on the N4Moms site and those veteran moms have encouraged me tremendously as well!
@ MommyLisa. What I have learned is that we will never stop being moms. I speak to my mom everyday. If she doesn't hear from me, she will call me the next day and ask me what happened? LOL She tells me all the time that regardless of how old I am, married with children, she always wants the best for me and my family and that all she has done and continues to do in her life is for her children and grand children. I guess that's the circle of life. :-)
Our children/spouses, friends, are quite lucky to have such support. As I am writing my son, my mind sometimes drifts and thinks about those SR's that may not have such love and support, and I am suddenly saddened for them. All while being grateful that I am blessed to be rich in Love.
I think this not going out on the weekends cause I am afraid to miss a call has me sentimental, or perhaps I'm just hormonal... hahahahaha
I have been reading your stories about how your SR chose the Navy. I was blind sighted by my daughters decision. She was all signed up to go to college for fashion design and fashion merchandising. She had talked to National Guard recruiter at school and When I got home one evening she said she needed to talk to me and I should sit down. (I have to admit I thought she was going to tell me she was pregnant) and told me she wanted to join the guards. Somehow I managed to stay calm and told her she needed to make an informed decision and talk to people who have been in-both good and bad experiences. Her boyfriend has been a sea cadet for years and I think he influenced her more than a bit. She did what I asked and talked to all the recruiters that can to school. At 17 she made the decision she was joining the Navy. There was no talking her out of it. When I tried talking to her she would say, "Mom, you always said I could do anything and this is what I want and this is what I want. " Inside it killed me, but I knew I couldn't make her decisions for her. No one in my family has ever been in the service so I went in blindly. She graduated in June, turned 18 in July and left for BC in September. The hardest thing is not being able to protect her. She is my only daughter and after the couple "teen years" that were rough, we were very close. I miss her so much but I am proud she is serving our country. It is not what I would have chose for her, but I had to step back and let her make those decisions. I still struggle, but I know she is the strong independent woman that I had always hoped she would be.
You guys are hilarious. I now always have to pump my own gas since both my older boys are in the Navy. I have a "new" car and the stupidest thing happens every time I pump my gas. I set it to run by itself and then step well away from the car. When the pump clicks off, I count 2 beats, and then WHOOSH out comes a flood of gas all over the car and the ground. I have tried holding it and stopping it myself, but it happens every time. My husband says it never happens to him. Figures. First time, I got it all over myself and had to go back home and shower again. We are in FL too - we have armadillo traps in our yard LOL.
@ 503 808, I recall driving to Philly when I was in my early 20's and sitting at a gas station for about 10 minutes before I got in the car and went in the convenience store to complain about their service. Needless to say, I learned how to pump gas that day... LOL @ KB2OWJ Ship 03 Div 415, I am deathly afraid of wildlife. I go camping with my husband and freak out. We lived in the Poconos for 4 years while my son attended high school and the Black Bears scared the mess out of me. Its crazy cause I have a Jeep Wrangler and wont take it out on Trails cause I don't want to be where bugs are. I take the top off and go to the mall. It's no rock crawler, but a Mall Crawler.. hahaha
I've had to pump my own gas on occasion. Last year we traveled to Pennsylvania to get gas during the Hurricane Sandy power outage. I'm only 25 miles from the border. The guy at the station looked at me funny because he saw the Jersey plate and thought I couldn't do it. LOL
