Just some good stuff to know...

Once you read the Great Lakes Naval Training Command website (specifically the "family" drop down), at: http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/
...you may want to visit the NEX website: https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexjobs/nx_show_state?p_state=IL

...the recruit store link
:
https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexstore/nx_display_facility_new?
p_facility_no=106

the NEX Gift Card link:
https://www.navy-nex.com/command/customer_service/gift_card.htm

It is my understanding that they automatically deduct $150 of their funds (payroll) and deposit it in a NEX account, for them to use for their wanted or other items. I will have to write my SR to see if this is the case : )

Angie F posted this on one of the groups recently. I feel it is great information for us;

..."when the Recruits arrive at RTC there is a lot of intake and processing and then they are assigned to their divisions. As I understand it, they are first asked if anyone has prior experiance with N/ROTC, Band, or other musical skills or leadership. Those who do AND who have high ASVAB scores tend to be chosen to be placed in a 900 Division. There is usually only one of these Divs per TG (Training Group) consisting of multiple divisions which graduate together on the same date.

The 900s are the ones tasked with helping to run the PIR (Pass in Review-i.e. Graduation) ceremony. Each incoming 900 Div is given one of three support roles on a constantly rotating basis, i.e. Ship Staff-non musical, includes the graduating Honor Guard Rifle Drill Team, Flags-presents US, States, POW/MIA, and finally Triple Threat-musical, the Jr. Drill team, Bluejacket Band and Choir and Drum Corps. If they see that he has the qualifications, he may be chosen to be assigned, just depends on where they are in the rotation, among other factors. There will be other Navy opportunities beyond BC that he can indicate his interest in and offer his talents to as well. :) "

I just purchased a NEX Gift card. I used the send to me option. I want to make sure it is sent with the proper address while in BC at GL.

The staying connected with other N4Ms is truly helping with my "missing my son times."

My profile picture is a special item that my son gave me several months ago. I carry it with me all the time. My special item that goes with me ~ since he can't. He thinks it is funny!

Suggestions from other N4M members regarding PIR
:
Take binoculars
Ask your sailor to set up a meeting spot within the hall. I guess it gets hectic when Liberty is called.
(I am not sure how our performing group returns their flags, etc. before Liberty.)
Be prepared! Some have experienced a non-Grad N Go status to be changed right up to PIR. This could mean a minimal visit at Great Lakes, spending most of your time at the airport.
Picture experiences: They are ordered by our sons and daughters to be picked up at the NEX PIR weekend. Experience prices ranged from $147 to $250 (with DVD).
Each Division designs a flag. Flag design items (sweat shirts, t-shirts,etc) can be purchased at the NEX.
"A" School note - civilian clothes are not worn immediately. Expereince by the attending families said they are weaned in within about two (2) weeks. It was stated they earn this right.
Most of their Sailors wanted to get out and see Chicago.

Christine gave us some great information regarding our seating ~ We sat directly to the left of the review stage. There should be signs with the divisions numbers where they will be and parents are encouraged to sit in that area across from where their division will be. There will be recruits from future graduating divisions to help with questions about seating areas. They are very polite young men and women. Don't forget to tell your son to order the PIR DVD and division "yearbook" when he orders his portraits.

This is from me ~ : )
I have had 2 weekends of homework hell. In addition, my mom placed herself in a nursing home...I guess for a vacation! Had to deal with that....grrrrr. I hope to have a break and get the "Vehicle Identifier Game" banners completed by 11/4. I have to put one in the SUV window to make sure that it is obvious : )

Hello! It is me : ) ~ kk
Everything I post below is what I have been told by recent (8/2009 & 9/2009) PIR N4Ms;
Apparently, seating is by divisions. 900 series divison guests have been sitting next to the VIP area.
The pictures, yearbook, DVD, etc. are paid for at the NEX. Do not worry, if you need more, you can order more.
They do not know about Grad-N-Go until a week or two before. BUT ~ a recent Sailor was told he was not, and found out the night before that he was. Be prepared for anything.
If they are Grad-N-Go, you can take their laptops and cell phones to the airport and hand them over to them.
~ I hope this helps ~ kk

DonnaM...Is your son Color Guard (also a flag - but different from the state flags)? ~ kk
Comment by MamaBear kk on November 1, 2009 at 12:33pm
JulieR ~ I was told "only the Color Guard" might go on the trip. My son is a flag. Most SRs do not leave during BC. We have Veteran's Day coming on 11/11 ~ maybe some are performing. ~ kk
Comment by MamaBear kk on October 31, 2009 at 11:55pm
Based on past comments, I thought they were performing 10/30. I guess 2 weeks means 4 in BC ~ lol So their first performance is 11/6. Which makes sense, as they normally do their PIR and the 2 prior.

DonnaM ! It is my understanding that not all are going on the field trip.

arlietz ~ My son had the early bird shift in the beginning of BC. Yep ~ snow watch includes shoveling. It is all about looking up and down. If it hits the ground, they have to shovel it on snow watch. Snow watch starts every November 1st ~ giggling here : ) They have been ironing nights and weekends since boot camp started. Some are even sewing, if need be.

We may get phone calls prior to the start of Battle Stations 21. I can't wait for the big one after BS 21! ~ kk

More good information from Christine (as posted on the 900 Divison page:

"mamabear, Christian's battle station date was Tues before PIR, I know they try to keep to some type of schedule but sometimes things happen and they don't get to stick to it. your son should know a few days to a week before they have bs21. I do know it's after the "gas" exercise. Is everyone doing o.k? staying on track for PIR date? I pray all are well and will graduate on time. I know of kids that were suppose to grad with mine on 9/25 that fell ill and still waiting to grad, that's tough for the kid as well as the parents so I pray everyone is well and healthy."

Kate ~ I am so glad I found you : ) I have a suggestion. The best advice comes from the moms/spouses/girl friends, etc. that have gone through recent experiences. I have read and been told incorrect information, as the Navy changes every minute. I hope that I have corrected any mis-statements. Example: I work with a Navy veteran that had BC approximately 9 years ago...it is so different now.

To all my Ship 06 Division 901 buddies ~ Take heed when receiving information within the chat room and look at the dates of posted information.

Are you ready for our Vehicle Identifier Game?
Comment by MamaBear kk on October 31, 2009 at 6:43am
arlietx ~ Yes...some are on hold for A school. It depends on your rate. I read about one son that was on hold in Pensacola for several months. I spoke with another mom, whose son had PIR in August and he will be starting his A school in January. Her son does not mind, as they keep them busy - but have the freedoms of a base. My understanding is that is is all about how the specific rate (job) fills. My son was told prior to BC that he may be on hold in Pensacola also. He was not concerned as the winters in Pensacola are so much nice than northern Ohio : ) From what I have read they have tasks and a schedule to adhere to - no complaints. My son may miss another semester of college - but we are all about the Navy schedule now. ~ kk

I found Kate while entering a chat to ask Christine questions about the 900 Divisions seating, etc. during PIR. Her son was a recent PIR. She said that we are seated in the bleachers next to the VIPs. She stated it was encouraged that we stay in the bleachers until our Sailor finds us. She said that she could not wait that long and bolted toward him. Gee...now would any of us do that? Dam straight we would!

((((((((((((hugs))))))))))) to you all ~ kk
