Just some good stuff to know...

Once you read the Great Lakes Naval Training Command website (specifically the "family" drop down), at: http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/
...you may want to visit the NEX website: https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexjobs/nx_show_state?p_state=IL

...the recruit store link
:
https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexstore/nx_display_facility_new?
p_facility_no=106

the NEX Gift Card link:
https://www.navy-nex.com/command/customer_service/gift_card.htm

It is my understanding that they automatically deduct $150 of their funds (payroll) and deposit it in a NEX account, for them to use for their wanted or other items. I will have to write my SR to see if this is the case : )

Angie F posted this on one of the groups recently. I feel it is great information for us;

..."when the Recruits arrive at RTC there is a lot of intake and processing and then they are assigned to their divisions. As I understand it, they are first asked if anyone has prior experiance with N/ROTC, Band, or other musical skills or leadership. Those who do AND who have high ASVAB scores tend to be chosen to be placed in a 900 Division. There is usually only one of these Divs per TG (Training Group) consisting of multiple divisions which graduate together on the same date.

The 900s are the ones tasked with helping to run the PIR (Pass in Review-i.e. Graduation) ceremony. Each incoming 900 Div is given one of three support roles on a constantly rotating basis, i.e. Ship Staff-non musical, includes the graduating Honor Guard Rifle Drill Team, Flags-presents US, States, POW/MIA, and finally Triple Threat-musical, the Jr. Drill team, Bluejacket Band and Choir and Drum Corps. If they see that he has the qualifications, he may be chosen to be assigned, just depends on where they are in the rotation, among other factors. There will be other Navy opportunities beyond BC that he can indicate his interest in and offer his talents to as well. :) "

I just purchased a NEX Gift card. I used the send to me option. I want to make sure it is sent with the proper address while in BC at GL.

The staying connected with other N4Ms is truly helping with my "missing my son times."

My profile picture is a special item that my son gave me several months ago. I carry it with me all the time. My special item that goes with me ~ since he can't. He thinks it is funny!

Suggestions from other N4M members regarding PIR
:
Take binoculars
Ask your sailor to set up a meeting spot within the hall. I guess it gets hectic when Liberty is called.
(I am not sure how our performing group returns their flags, etc. before Liberty.)
Be prepared! Some have experienced a non-Grad N Go status to be changed right up to PIR. This could mean a minimal visit at Great Lakes, spending most of your time at the airport.
Picture experiences: They are ordered by our sons and daughters to be picked up at the NEX PIR weekend. Experience prices ranged from $147 to $250 (with DVD).
Each Division designs a flag. Flag design items (sweat shirts, t-shirts,etc) can be purchased at the NEX.
"A" School note - civilian clothes are not worn immediately. Expereince by the attending families said they are weaned in within about two (2) weeks. It was stated they earn this right.
Most of their Sailors wanted to get out and see Chicago.

Christine gave us some great information regarding our seating ~ We sat directly to the left of the review stage. There should be signs with the divisions numbers where they will be and parents are encouraged to sit in that area across from where their division will be. There will be recruits from future graduating divisions to help with questions about seating areas. They are very polite young men and women. Don't forget to tell your son to order the PIR DVD and division "yearbook" when he orders his portraits.

JulieR ~ I do not think yet. I am trying to find the time line I once saw on a website. Still looking.... ~ kk

I know! I had mine on the way to work driving on a country road. I use to leave my son notes on the kitchen counter for when he returned home from work or left for class. Miss those notes and his replies! ~ kk

JulieR & DAVIDSmom ~ My son sends a letter to both of us different envelopes), and tells us to read them to each other. He sends one to his sister (she owns her own home), and he asks her to read her letter to us. Their letters are a few lines. Mine are more than one page! LOL Unless the envelope says "Family," everyone opens their own.

Now the funny part; When my son was pre-kindergarten, he would sort the mail. My mail stack was substantial. My husband asked him why he only gave him the junk mail. His reply, "You ONLY get the mail that says "OCCUPANT!" ~ hahahaha

JulieR ~ Thank you! You know the trend; you always get mail the day before I do. Hopefully, tomorrow is my day! I am going to locate the link to their activity time line to post above.

I had a melt down this evening. No contact with my son and a friend in hospice is making my heart hurt and my "eyes drool." ~ my son's term, ~ kk

OK...I pulled the timeline that my son sent me. I will pass on the details of his first week. 2nd week = 9/28 P1; eyes & teeth checked, 9/29 P2; blood testing, 9/30 P3; marching and went to NEX, 10/1 P4; shots (7 total), 10/2 P5; marched PT & IT. This will give you an idea of when they started "P" processing. This is just a glimpse...they are busy, busy, busy! ~ kk

DAVIDSmom ~ Your son is going to get "mass quantities" of awesome mail from you! Remember it is such a roller coaster. For me it is waves and waves and waves. When JulieR and I found each other, it was at the right time. We shared our sad times and proud times.

You came to our site later...here is one of my "down stories" ~ The day of MEPS and the airport was fun for us (my daughter and I were with a group of 6 leaving). We were very up with each other and met some really nice parents. When I saw my son, placed in charge of the other 5, walk through security carrying the huge envelope with the other 5 recruits following in a line (as if they were going on a field trip), I started to gasp for air. You feel so helpless. My daughter and I went to dinner and we were very "zombie like." I knew she did not want me to be alone. When I came home I threw myself across my bed and was not going to move. Then I felt a lick on my cheek, it was our dog telling me that she was here for me. She and I discussed (laughing) and I pulled myself together and went to my class ~ and my phone never left my hand ~ and my token never left me either.

When of my sad waves after that; I was leaving for tap class. As I walked out the door, I looked down to make sure I had socks on. There I saw the left foot with a black clog and a right foot with a fushia flip flop ~ I had been walking around like that for over 2 hours and I never knew! LOL

I miss him so much! i am so proud of him. ~ kk

kimbokatbo ~ Those videos kept me up! During the period of 3/2009 and 9/2009, I watched them often. I have to watch them again tongiht before Zumba : ) ~ kk
I am goign to watch the one JulieR recommended tonight : )

I can't wait for the "mailperson" today!

arlietx ~ He replied, "I want to learn the Navy way!" My daughter said, "Mom can teach you tricks!" haha

My first letter said, "I am washing my stuff all the time." Not sure what stuff he was washing, but at that time many were sick (those shots mess them up big time).

arlietx ~ You should check out the Navy Lodge! As far as the sewing goes...they sew buttons on, patches too I think! I wanted to teach my son irioning and button sewing before he left. He denied me! : (

He has sewn, as he is very retro and has designed high top tennis shoes, curtains, etc. I know this sounds weird...the curtains are still hanging and I try nto to look at them LOL!
