Information

Alumni Division 901 PIR (Graduate) Friday, 20 Nov 09

This group is started for our SRs ~ division 901 PIR date of 11/20/2009. I will add more information and links later : ) ~ kk

Members: 15
Latest Activity: Jan 18, 2013

Just some good stuff to know...

Once you read the Great Lakes Naval Training Command website (specifically the "family" drop down), at: http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/
...you may want to visit the NEX website: https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexjobs/nx_show_state?p_state=IL

...the recruit store link
:
https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexstore/nx_display_facility_new?
p_facility_no=106

the NEX Gift Card link:
https://www.navy-nex.com/command/customer_service/gift_card.htm

It is my understanding that they automatically deduct $150 of their funds (payroll) and deposit it in a NEX account, for them to use for their wanted or other items. I will have to write my SR to see if this is the case : )

Angie F posted this on one of the groups recently. I feel it is great information for us;

..."when the Recruits arrive at RTC there is a lot of intake and processing and then they are assigned to their divisions. As I understand it, they are first asked if anyone has prior experiance with N/ROTC, Band, or other musical skills or leadership. Those who do AND who have high ASVAB scores tend to be chosen to be placed in a 900 Division. There is usually only one of these Divs per TG (Training Group) consisting of multiple divisions which graduate together on the same date.

The 900s are the ones tasked with helping to run the PIR (Pass in Review-i.e. Graduation) ceremony. Each incoming 900 Div is given one of three support roles on a constantly rotating basis, i.e. Ship Staff-non musical, includes the graduating Honor Guard Rifle Drill Team, Flags-presents US, States, POW/MIA, and finally Triple Threat-musical, the Jr. Drill team, Bluejacket Band and Choir and Drum Corps. If they see that he has the qualifications, he may be chosen to be assigned, just depends on where they are in the rotation, among other factors. There will be other Navy opportunities beyond BC that he can indicate his interest in and offer his talents to as well. :) "

I just purchased a NEX Gift card. I used the send to me option. I want to make sure it is sent with the proper address while in BC at GL.

The staying connected with other N4Ms is truly helping with my "missing my son times."

My profile picture is a special item that my son gave me several months ago. I carry it with me all the time. My special item that goes with me ~ since he can't. He thinks it is funny!

Suggestions from other N4M members regarding PIR
:
Take binoculars
Ask your sailor to set up a meeting spot within the hall. I guess it gets hectic when Liberty is called.
(I am not sure how our performing group returns their flags, etc. before Liberty.)
Be prepared! Some have experienced a non-Grad N Go status to be changed right up to PIR. This could mean a minimal visit at Great Lakes, spending most of your time at the airport.
Picture experiences: They are ordered by our sons and daughters to be picked up at the NEX PIR weekend. Experience prices ranged from $147 to $250 (with DVD).
Each Division designs a flag. Flag design items (sweat shirts, t-shirts,etc) can be purchased at the NEX.
"A" School note - civilian clothes are not worn immediately. Expereince by the attending families said they are weaned in within about two (2) weeks. It was stated they earn this right.
Most of their Sailors wanted to get out and see Chicago.

Christine gave us some great information regarding our seating ~ We sat directly to the left of the review stage. There should be signs with the divisions numbers where they will be and parents are encouraged to sit in that area across from where their division will be. There will be recruits from future graduating divisions to help with questions about seating areas. They are very polite young men and women. Don't forget to tell your son to order the PIR DVD and division "yearbook" when he orders his portraits.

fyi....I posted this on "Boot Camp Moms" this morning;

I would like to know where you are getting the information about the SRs not getting their mail for 2 weeks because they hold it? I would advise all to call their SR's recruiter for the address. The recruiters are capable of pulling this information from the database. Even though the address may be different than the form letter, USE IT, until you have the form letter address. I did. It worked. We did not experience a 2 week mail hold. Sometimes we are mis-informed. I read on N4Ms that they only get mail on Sundays.- INCORRECT! Another mom took the time to correct me. I was very appreciative and she was correct. My son did not experience a 2 week mail hold. Write! Write! Write!

kimbokatbo ~ So far it will be Mom, Dad, Sister, and not sure of our other guest yet.

JulieR ~ I will have to watch that one tonight. We can't access Youtube at work (blocked).

Pensacola for "A" and possibly "C" school here.

JulieR ~ "Hey Mom! I have something for you. Look! It is a ship with a little pair of pants!" Then he handed me this Jones Soda Co. bottle cap. He laughed, and I said "Awww...it is so cute!" I have been carrying it ever since, as it reminded me of his new adventure; the Navy.

kimbokatbo ~ We are staying at the Navy Lodge : ) You too?

When we get closer to November, I will contact a friend that lives in Chicago and ask her to recommend a few good places to Meet N Greet, then throw them out there for your thoughts. We should also check out the all division group ~ but then again it may be too large.

All moms ~ I wrote my son to tell him that we have the group started for Ship 06 Div 901. I told him to spread the word to others ~ when it is safe to talk. We should get more members. Do not forget to check the all ship/division PIR 11/20/2009 too. They have some good information. Remember the division started at 88 ~ there will be more of us!

Have a wonderful week! ~ kk

JulieR, and other moms interested ~ It was easy to order the NEX gift card. If you use the link I entered above, it was easy to purchase one. I used the "send to me" option. I was worried that the proper address would not be used. It will be shipped directly to me on 10/13. After receipt, I will send it to my son. The fee was $1.75 and $0.61 postage. I want to make sure he has funds to use for things other than toiletries and school supplies. If he likes the idea, I can add more to the card. It is my understanding he can use the card at Pensacola too. ~ kk

arlietx ~ Sure you will...If my son's ship out is not Grad-N-Go, we will be there through Sunday. You will not be able to miss me. I will be the mom that is a foot and a half shorter than her SR. They always put me at the kid's table around the holidays (I actually prefer it! And I get the back seat!)... ; ) As soon as I know which flag he will be carrying, I will let you know. Very Very Very tall with those awesom BCGs! ; )~ kk

DAVIDSmom ~ I did not research the clock download. For me it is too early to count the days. I am still on the week count down. ; )~kk

I hope I get a letter on Tuesday - with the holiday on Monday, it may be later in the week. JulieR will tell me and I can judge that I will be the following day!

DAVIDSmom...We need to bring you up! I think he is aware of the mail delay at the beginning of BC. I would love to have 20 letters and cards to open on Sunday, and many other days. He knows you miss him! I have 2 YouTube videos on my page. I posted them after my son left for GL BC. I think if you watch them, as I have since 3/2009, they will give you a special feeling about the opportunities he will have. This is so hard. I know! I had a melt down today...but the melt downs help you to vent and make you stronger...for you AND him. (((((((((hugs to you))))))) ~ kk

JulieR ~ Christine posted a parking area not far from base that I believe was cheap (by big city standards that is). I will try to locate it later and place the info on our site. If you find it, copy/paste to me in a message and I will place it on our site.

If I decide to take Amtrak, I may be looking at the public transportation system also. Here is a thought ~ Can you park at a metro-type train lot and take the train in. We call them the "rapid transit." Our lots are free. Maybe?

I am sure you will know your schedule once your daughter gets closer to GL. You are lucky, you will have her nearby for "A" school. I will be taking many flights to Florida starting in November. I miss him soooo much!

fyi...I have to work on my learning curve to print some pictures today. He is going to laugh (or at least smile at some). He has a great sense of humor.

I can't wait to meet you! ~ kk

Angie...It was posted AND the form letter stated the 11/20 date. I am good to go. We are staying at the Navy Lodge AND driving : ) Did you walk from the Navy Lodge to GL? We are northerners, so we know the cold. I can't wait! ~ kk
