Information

Alumni Division 901 PIR (Graduate) Friday, 20 Nov 09

This group is started for our SRs ~ division 901 PIR date of 11/20/2009. I will add more information and links later : ) ~ kk

Latest Activity: Jan 18, 2013

Just some good stuff to know...

Once you read the Great Lakes Naval Training Command website (specifically the "family" drop down), at: http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/
...you may want to visit the NEX website: https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexjobs/nx_show_state?p_state=IL

...the recruit store link
:
https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexstore/nx_display_facility_new?
p_facility_no=106

the NEX Gift Card link:
https://www.navy-nex.com/command/customer_service/gift_card.htm

It is my understanding that they automatically deduct $150 of their funds (payroll) and deposit it in a NEX account, for them to use for their wanted or other items. I will have to write my SR to see if this is the case : )

Angie F posted this on one of the groups recently. I feel it is great information for us;

..."when the Recruits arrive at RTC there is a lot of intake and processing and then they are assigned to their divisions. As I understand it, they are first asked if anyone has prior experiance with N/ROTC, Band, or other musical skills or leadership. Those who do AND who have high ASVAB scores tend to be chosen to be placed in a 900 Division. There is usually only one of these Divs per TG (Training Group) consisting of multiple divisions which graduate together on the same date.

The 900s are the ones tasked with helping to run the PIR (Pass in Review-i.e. Graduation) ceremony. Each incoming 900 Div is given one of three support roles on a constantly rotating basis, i.e. Ship Staff-non musical, includes the graduating Honor Guard Rifle Drill Team, Flags-presents US, States, POW/MIA, and finally Triple Threat-musical, the Jr. Drill team, Bluejacket Band and Choir and Drum Corps. If they see that he has the qualifications, he may be chosen to be assigned, just depends on where they are in the rotation, among other factors. There will be other Navy opportunities beyond BC that he can indicate his interest in and offer his talents to as well. :) "

I just purchased a NEX Gift card. I used the send to me option. I want to make sure it is sent with the proper address while in BC at GL.

The staying connected with other N4Ms is truly helping with my "missing my son times."

My profile picture is a special item that my son gave me several months ago. I carry it with me all the time. My special item that goes with me ~ since he can't. He thinks it is funny!

Suggestions from other N4M members regarding PIR
:
Take binoculars
Ask your sailor to set up a meeting spot within the hall. I guess it gets hectic when Liberty is called.
(I am not sure how our performing group returns their flags, etc. before Liberty.)
Be prepared! Some have experienced a non-Grad N Go status to be changed right up to PIR. This could mean a minimal visit at Great Lakes, spending most of your time at the airport.
Picture experiences: They are ordered by our sons and daughters to be picked up at the NEX PIR weekend. Experience prices ranged from $147 to $250 (with DVD).
Each Division designs a flag. Flag design items (sweat shirts, t-shirts,etc) can be purchased at the NEX.
"A" School note - civilian clothes are not worn immediately. Expereince by the attending families said they are weaned in within about two (2) weeks. It was stated they earn this right.
Most of their Sailors wanted to get out and see Chicago.

Christine gave us some great information regarding our seating ~ We sat directly to the left of the review stage. There should be signs with the divisions numbers where they will be and parents are encouraged to sit in that area across from where their division will be. There will be recruits from future graduating divisions to help with questions about seating areas. They are very polite young men and women. Don't forget to tell your son to order the PIR DVD and division "yearbook" when he orders his portraits.

JulieR ~ My son is starting week 4! He will have a total of 9 weeks BC by 11/20 PIR. So yes ~ he will have an extra week. The 5 other Recruits that he traveled with, are probably having their PIR on 11/13. I am calling one of their moms tomorrow to see.

I am researching the NEX card tomorrow. I will let you know. I seem to have my days & nights mixed. I fall asleep doing homework, wake at 2:30 and do more homework...then go to work. I did a huge project today, took 2 quizes and a test...tired!

DAVIDSmom ~ no phone calls here, just the needed information business call last week. I have read that the first phone call comes anywhere from 3 to 5 weeks. I keep my cell with me all the time - just in case. Did your son take a phone card along with him?

I am behind my letter writing and card writing. I am getting back on it tonight! I was looking at the grocery store sale ad this evening, and started to circle things that my son may want...then I remembered. It is a weird feeling...always missing him. ~ kk

Happy Saturday all ~ : )

Some of our Recruits will soon be starting their 4th week. Can you believe it JulieR!
We are still "newbies" but learning a lot. Things to think about for the period, 11/19 through 11/22: a meet n greet on 11/19, and some events in Chicago we can share with each other. I know my son will probably want some down time and a "Hollywood Shower." But I will research the aquariam, the zoo, restaurants, etc. He may even want a "movie fix" with his sister : ) I will post some of this information on the above information section with links as I research. If you have ideas, please pass them along. Thank you & have a wonderful weekend. Write, write, write!

JulieR ~ I am so bad about doing my course work the past 2 weeks! I hope you are keeping up : )

DAVIDSmom ~ I sent you a message. Also...they are all sick or hurting in some form. They get shots that make them very sore. Also, did you every get punky from a flu shot. Can you imagine feeling sick and still doing intense training, and physical fitness, and getting 4 to 6 hours of sleep and night? Actually ~ I think only Moms have had this experience : ) I am sorry to hear about the ear infection. I hope my message helps. It is a wave ~ some days the tears are null, some days they are a waterfall. N4Ms is a good place to vent ~ don't you think? : )

DAVIDSmom ~ The division is getting mail. I am not sure if you are aware but my son arrived at GL on 9/21. He was the first in the division. As the week progressed, more SRs were placed in the division. I sent my first letter as soon as I received his modified (not official) address, which was on or about 9/25. I am thinking that it may take "x" amount of days before their mail finds them initially. When you send him letters, enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope - it will save him time.

Also, note that your son's address has a total of 5 lines as it appears on the form letter.

Send letters, hand made cards, more letters, pictures, more letters ~ all with love, encouragement, and reinforce how proud you are of him. The more your cry ( I know I do!), the more you need to encourage him.

Oh yes! Please, please, please do not send cards with sounds or music ~ for the entire division's sake ~ lol. Also, sticking with plain white envelopes, no scents, no stickers, no drawings is best. I find I cry less, when I write more.

Also...keep something of his with you. Helps with the lack of communication. I do. JulieR does!

Let me see...toiletries, school supplies, canteen, etc. I am going to order a gift card for him this weekend.

Three (3) letters today! One for sister, one for dad, and the best one for mom! lol I received a double stamped letter. We were all to read our letters to each other. Tears when I read it the first time and tears and broken voice when I read it aloud.
As of the my son's letter date (10/4), one of my letters was received. He noted the receipt date as; "Sunday, Day 7 - 1st letter from you, first in whole division."

You probably already know about the sore butts (so many shots).

Based on the NEX receipts that he sent me, I am researching the NEX gift card. The expenses probably will not hit them until they get their first pay notification.

Our SRs are taking one day at a time ~ we are taking one hour at a time! ~kk

Wow! Could it be their division is 5 females down! Well, remember this is when they have to "cut the mustard." I am proud of them!

They are almost 3 weeks in ~ at least my son is. ~ kk

Welcome kimbokatbo! We hope you like our group. We feel it is a bit more concentrated on our SR's 901 division.

I think you will like us!
