Mike's Mom, that was an awesome list with great suggestions.  Thanks for posting!

Dillonsmom, Woohoo!

Thanks MikesMom!

Also, if you rent a car and are willing to pay the addititonal fee, ask the renatl place about an iPASS for the car. It costs for the use of it AND the tolls. BUT , the way it works is that there is a apecial iPASS lane and you just make sure you drive through that. No stopping to throw change in.

I was there for 6 days and somehow just knew I would be driving a lot, and so I went for "ease of use" and paid for it. The toll fees pulled of my debit card within a week after I came home.

Hello fellow Moms!

My son PIR'd last Friday (11/16) and I'd like to pass along my "Top Ten" list:

1. Go to Sarges!  Bring paper to take notes, especially on his suggestions on how to get to base and where to park (if you're not taking a shuttle)

2. Get there early, or you'll have to stand in looooong lines. Sit on the bottom tier, toward the top of the bleachers - the upper deck is a pretty far view, and the safety rail gets in the way.

3. Bring a seat cushion (like you might use at a football game). They are aluminum bleachers, and get cold & hard pretty fast. (they sell them there for $5, also)

4. Take tons of pictures

5. Bring your patience! There are many, many people there in a relatively small space. You might have to wait around for your sailor. Everyone will be going to the NEX to buy souvenirs. Walk just beyond the NEX and there is a lounge/arcade. Comfy couches and chairs. Wait there for a while, you can buy souvenirs in about 30 - 45 minutes without the really long lines and crowds.

6. Bring lots of change - the toll road around GL has toll booths at every on & off ramp. Most of those are not manned, but require coins only. The major toll booths can take bills and make change. Pay attention to where the cash lanes are - some are right, some are left (mostly to the far right, though)

7. If you run out of change - just make note of the website on the change basket, and the exit number. You can pay online. (if you don't - they'll come a lookin' for ya!)

8. Please! Don't complain to your sailor about the "hurry up and wait" situation (if that applies to you). It's totally out of their control, and they don't like it any better - they've just gotten used to it by now!  :)

9. Make the little time you have together enjoyable - this day is all about your Sailor. Do whatever it takes to make him/her happy. Make nothing but happy memories.

10. Relax! Don't try to shove too many activities into your time together. My son said he was just happy to be with us, not get yelled at, and be able to have a conversation while eating!

Any "Sailor" calls yet from div 13 or 14? The anticipation is killing me.

Comment by Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor on November 19, 2012 at 4:35pm

diannep, he looks really great considering everything he has been through.  I am continuing to pray for his recovery.

Hoping that calls come in soon.

Dinnep, about the toll roads from Chicago  O'Hare to Waukegan...do you have to have exact amount or can they make change from a 5 or 10 dollar bill?  thanks

Comment by GoNavyShip014Div013 on November 19, 2012 at 3:46pm

We are suppose to fly up tomorrow evening, of course, that depends on the call, which I am praying it's the "I'm a Sailor" and not the "I've been set back 2 weeks" call.  Ughhhhh, my stomach is in knots right now, blast the waiting....prayers please.
