As far as the first call...they are NOT guaranteed to call. Most get 3 calls: the "I'm here" call, the "I'm still alive" call (3 weeks) and the "I'm a Sailor" call (after Battlestations)...some only get the last one, some get all, some get more....depends on the division, RDC and the rct.
Watch for the 847 area code and the id is usually payphone...occ it is withheld or restricted.
Sometimes they get a quick info call the first week or two...the id is US Government then.
They all need calling cards...it eats up 30 minutes to just make a call from a payphone....so they need a bunch of minutes. They can buy calling cards at the NEX. If you send them one ...make sure it is activated first (saves time)
When you get your first call DO YOUR BEST NOT TO CRY…your rct will be emotional and most likely will be tearful and if they’re not, they will be if you are and then you’ll waste valuable talking time crying.
Let them talk…they don’t get to talk much at boot camp, have questions and a pen and paper by the phone to jot down what they say. When they call and you hear their sweet voice…everything you wanted to ask will go out of your mind.
If they are upset..just reassure them, let them know that it will get better, it is only a few weeks and after boot camp it is MUCH better. Tell them you love them, yes you do miss them but are looking SO forward to seeing them march through those doors at PIR.
Then, hang up and come on here and cry and shout and be happy that you heard from your rct !!!
In the Navy, "no news is good news." They are allowed to contact you almost immediately if something goes wrong, and if they cannot, the Navy does. It was just over five weeks from the time my son left home and his first call, four weeks is typical.

Yes Watson we don't need much but as a mom we just need a quick check in to now or child is ok. I still check the mail daily in anticipation that there will be something. Maybe this weekend like you said. Will be sure to keep everyone posted if anything comes.
What's the FB page...and he had toi call twice last week for names addresses and phones numbers for A School...his PIR is 11/23/2011. And his first "real" letter came 2 days ago
AlohagirlCA, when you get to the site there is also a discussion going for Ship 12 Div007.  You might have to scroll down a ways to find it

02-902 is calling today!  A long phone call and letters on the way!

Wow!!  That's great news!  Did you get a call?  I was guessing that next week might be when we get a call (DIV 801).  902 must have "earned" a call.
Yeah 02-902 so glad you could finally call. I know this momma feels much better. Happy day!!!
Azkmom.....just curious if you have gotten any letters or calls from your division? My son who is 902 did call yesterday, and this was the first phone call for him after being there for almost 4 weeks. I have not gotten any letters yet either, but he did say to expect letters this week. I am curious if this is the regular course of calls and letters for all the divisions ....from what I have read no one in 902 has gotten any calls or letters until just now. Have a great day, and I am so thankful that we are halfway there!

As far as I know, there haven't been any calls from 801.  I, personally, got a very short phone call last week. He needed a phone number. But there was really no conversation other than passing on phone and fax number.  The ONE and only thing he told me was they were now receiving mail.  I got my first real letter last week.  And I know his girlfriend got her first letter late last week.  My son got there Oct 4th so has only been there 3 weeks.  I think his timing was such that he got there just in time to fill a division so he wasn't hanging around while a division filled.  So glad you got to speak to your recruit yesterday!!! How did he sound?

He sounded like he is in good spirits, but ready to get this done. lol... I think knowing he is half way done really helps their outlook.
Just received a call from my daughter!!!  She sounded great...even after having wisdom teeth pulled and was SIQ for 2 days!  She said she looked like Elmer Fudd, only with hair .  She missed the first test because of the dental visit and has to "ace it" tomorrow (56 true/false/multiple choice questions in 30 minutes or less), or else!  I told her if anyone can do it, she can!  She only gets to write letters on Sundays.  She's actually having fun!  I miss my girl so much!
