Hello, Diana,

My SR is also Ship 12-Div 007. I'm curious how long you, or any others, are planning to stay in Great Lakes. Since we have no idea when our Sailors will be departing for A school, I'm not sure whether to leave on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. I've read that they typically depart on Fri. or Sat., but, since PIR is on Wed., I'm wondering if they could leave earlier than normal.

Thanks so much!

tlh_3119 - I'm driving from the Kansas City area, planning to arrive Tuesday evening (hopefully in time for the Meet & Greet), and leaving Saturday or Sunday morning.  My daughter is going across the street for A school so I'm going to stay as long as possible (everyone traveling w/ me has school or work the following Monday).  If your SR is going someplace other than Great Lakes for A school, s/he will be taken to the airport on Friday around 2 am and you can wait at the airport w/ him/her until their flight leaves.

We should have most of Thanksgiving Day to spend w/ our new Sailors!!!  Do you currently have plans for Thanksgiving Day?   Several families, staying at Navy Lodge, are planning a large Thanksgiving Day dinner together to help save on costs and travel.  The weather is another factor!  If you are interested in joining us, go to the following link and make your reservations.

You know, after several of us getting letters from our kiddos seeking lots of good food and peace and quiet for a bit, I'm feeling my daughter may not want to do a big gig with lots of people. She is really wanting some fresh air and a break from the rigors - which could mean a nice big, shared meal and chillin' at the Lodge or a meal out someplace and just seeing some more sights on Thursday.  I sent her a questionnaire with a return/stamped envelop asking her to pinpoint exactly what she thinks she'd like to do so we all can make solid plans. I'd hate to order more dinners than we need - or not enough. Hopefully, next week we'll have a good count and finalize our T-day dinner plans. For sure we can all hook up at the Meet and Greet Tuesday night.

Diana, I had already come to this conclusion!  I want my son to be free to choose what we will do.  He might want a hot shower and to sleep a few hours or to play his guitar that he's been missing.  We will play it by ear as we go along.  Yes, we will definitely be at one of the Meet and Greets.

Hi tlh, I am arriving Monday evening and my flight out is Friday @6:20pm.  The official facebook US Navy Recruit Training Command site told me that all Sailors not staying for A School at GLs will be departing on Friday. I am assuming, for now, that those Sailors will leave for the airport (Midway or OHare) at roughly 2am and wait at the USO until their flight leaves. I heard we family members may wait with them and escort them to the gate but must be in the company of our Sailor - as is, they will have to meet us at the gate or entry to the USO as we can't just wander the airport without them. My issue is that my room is at the Navy Lodge. I'll want to go to the airport with my daughter but do I take a chance and drive aaaaaaaaallllllllll the way back UP to GL to retrieve my stuff and drive aaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllll the way back in Friday traffic to get to the airport before my flight? Yikes. Guess no sleep on that day. I may just check out at the wee hours of Friday morning and hang out in south Chicago until it's time to fly out OR see if SW can bump me up a flight or two. It's a crap shoot....

I don't think they will leave earlier than normal. My guess, from pretty legit info is that we'll get 2ish days of liberty with them - those staying on may get more liberty but those moving on will most likely leave Friday.

My group is planning on leaving friday after thanksgiving - it is a long way back to texas and even longer way home after i get back into texas -  looking forward to thanksgiving with my sr - christmas will probably be  iffy this year.
I hear you on the iffy Christmas. This may be our very first without all my little fledglings under my roof :-/
yes - there is a strong possibility that it might? I couldn't decide what to do with his things in  his room as I was cleaning today! will he need it? - will not need it? it was a very weird feeling.

It is a weird feeling silk.....my SR's things are everywhere. She didn't get to finish packing and tucking/sorting because she was off a day on when she actually left home for MEPS. I've decided to just leave things as they are until after bootcamp and she is settled at A School. After that, she'll be bumping around so, really, I guess I'm the keeper of the stuff.....

I'm right there with you.  Nothing in my SR's room has been touched - and I was instructed not to do anything with them.  He did finish his laundry before he left - but I still need to wash his sheets.  I don't know if it was his way of coping.  Before he left for bc he would talk about when he is back home.  I know that after he gets to A school he is going to want stuff but I have no idea what.  I don't mind keeping his room as a shrine for now but eventually I'm going to need some direction on what he wants done with his things.  I do have to admit I still go in there sometimes and just sit in there.

We're heading back to Mississippi after we drop our SR off by 8:00 on Thursday.  We don't want to get in the Chicago Black Friday traffic!  We'll just travel far enough south to be out of the craziness!

UH OH!! I totally forgot about Black Friday. EEEEKKKK!  We'll have to drive from Great Lakes to Midway and get to the airport by 4pm the lateset to turn in the rental car, etc.  I guess we'll give ourselves 2-3 hours for all that :-/  We do what we gotta do....
