Before my son left one of the recruiters told him he would be able to come home for Christmas. When I dropped him off at the recruiters office to go to MEPS, the chief took him in the back to talk to him. When my son came out he told me he was told he would not be able to come home for Christmas. I wonder if he told him that to mess with him. It made me mad. So now I wonder if he will be able to come home for Christmas. Ugh

My family and I will be there for Thanksgiving Day and were wondering if anyone could give us any advice on a "good" place to eat Thanksgiving dinner? Thanks in advance!

Thank you diannep and chowdercall911.  He sounded so hopeful, I didn't want to tell him otherwise.  Flying in Monday and back on Friday to squeeze in as much time as there might be.  I was lucky to be able to take my oldest son back to my hotel the day of PIR and we flew home the next morning, days before Christmas.  I'm hoping for Christmas  :)

Sounds like "a plan," chowdercall.  Chicago is a nice place to explore!  There is a train station right next to RTC too which may work out well for you if you end up sightseeing.

chowdercall:  Since the longer you wait, the harder it will be to get flights, I would plan to fly back on Friday just in case he doesn't fly out until then.  The worst that could happen is that he would fly out Thanksgiving Day instead and in that case,  you and your sweet newborn daughter will be able to visit him at the airport then and get extra time with him.

Just checked on the Thanksgiving Week 2012 PIR page....there was one post from a mom who said her son was bussed to the airport PIR night to fly out early Thanksgiving morning....so it does sometimes happen.  I pray it doesn't for this group!

Comment by diannep on October 12, 2014 at 10:50am

chowdercall:  Doubtful that your husband will be flying out Wed night....they have never flown out the night of PIR....but they get bussed to the airports then for early morning to late afternoon flights the next day!  I haven't seen that happen in the Thanksgiving group for the past 4 yrs though....it has been Friday departures.  But they have to go when they can get group tickets for the sailors, so that is why there is no guarantee on that.

Sadly, being a holiday weekend, it may be hard to get decent fares.  For those who can fly up Tues and then back on Sat., maybe the fares would be better---or even flying back on Friday if you have a sailor flying out for A School  (which will probably be on Fri) may be better in pricing.  Of course, you take a chance then that your sailor may not fly out until Saturday and you would miss time with him/her.  Unfortunately, they will not know when they are flying out until right before PIR.

Good Morning!

No, 2ndTimeAround....they can't come home for Thanksgiving, but the RDCs may "mess with them" that they can.  But they probably will not fly out for A School until Friday after Thanksgiving, so you should have Thanksgiving Day with your sailor, hopefully.  No guarantees in the Navy, of course, but in past years, most flew out on Friday after Thanksgiving.  There is always a chance they won't fly out until Saturday (Sunday is not likely since that is a heavy travel day because of Thanksgiving).  So I would plan to stay up there until Sat. just in case.

And, yes, they get extra Liberty days because normally, when PIR is on Fri, they fly out the next day.  So they get an extra day in this group and those staying in GL for A School actually have 2 extra days....PIR Day through Sunday!
