Thanks for the info, diannep! It has been 2 weeks, so hopefully, he gets to pass out mail soon! Feels good to know he has that job, sounds like it would be a friend-maker!
ArizonaMom: Did you book a kitchenette at Navy Lodge? If so, that should be fine if you want to cook for your sailor. Not all of their rooms have the kitchenettes I don't believe. You may want to doublecheck with them. Navy Lodge is more affordable than Residence Inn for sure. I just looked at Residence Inn rates and for the 25th-27th, their cheapest room is $159/night. On the 28th, they go back down to $119 for that same room. So if you can get a kitchenette at Navy Lodge so you can cook for your sailor, that would be a good deal! Or if cooking isn't a priority, then stay where you are! Navy Lodge is a good deal and many like it there. Close to the base, and you get a pass to shop in one of the smaller NEXs without your sailor having to be with you.
If anyone tries to book Navy Lodge online but it shows it is full, try and call. Sometimes families in the past have been able to get a room that way from a cancelled reservation. I know it is Thanksgiving weekend, so many families of the sailors at A School will be arriving to be with their sailors. So the hotels will be pretty busy during your weekend. Don't wait to make your reservations! Do it now!
ArizonaMom: Awww....I know it is so hard. But they take good care of the SRs medically/dentally. If they are pulling them, then it means they see something that could be a problem in the future, like when he is deployed on a ship! They don't take any chances if they think there could be a potential need to pull them later---although not all will have them pulled. Some will be "watched" and could have them pulled in A School; others will be fine with no extraction. Yes, they do give them something for the pain. It is a very very common procedure up there so try not to worry. He won't be able to call you to tell you it was completed, but hopefully will get a division call soon after that so he can let you know how it went.
After this initial mail delivery, they will receive mail M-F, but can only write/mail out once a week....collected on Sundays/mailed on Mondays, so you will discover your "expected mail" day then. Mine was Thursdays down here in S. FL!
codysmom: Sounds like your son is the Recruit Mail Petty Officer, an important job! They have to thoroughly train him before they are allowed mail service. Once he is trained, they will be given their first "held" mail probably on a Sunday (usually about 2 weeks after they arrive). They will have their first letters collected then to mail out, but this usually happens right before they get their "held" mail so your first letters may ask you why you have not written? No worries, they received their mail that same day!
sherylb: He will not be setback for any dental procedures. He will get 2 days in SIQ (sick in rack) if he has his wisdom teeth out, but that extra time is "built into" Bootcamp days so he will be fine. Write him and tell him not to worry! There have even been SRs on here in the past who were hospitalized with pneumonia briefly and still graduated on time. They do their best to make sure the SRs graduate when they are supposed to if at all possible.
...and you can go ahead and book your hotel. They will take the credit card number to hold the reservation but won't charge it yet. It is best to book hotels now because some of them fill up, and the ones that offer the Navy Grad rate will sell out of those rooms. Cancellation policies for most of the hotels are up to the day before/day of arrival.
rjeyvie: YEP! Sure does! Those staying in GL for A school move over there shortly after PIR is over (takes a few hours, then they call you). They then have Liberty until later that night, and then have Daytime Liberty on Sat. and Sun. too....they have to be back on base each night anywhere from 8:30 to 10. Not sure if the time changes. They will know!
