HI all, I have a ? Does our recruit have to ask for one of those blue papers or are they sent to everyone. My son has not mentioned the paper yet but has stressted that he would like me to come out for xmass. I would be going without my husband and would also like to take a couple of buddies with him that did not have family come. Anyone know more than me

If I could go into their Ship I would hug each and everyone for all of you. I am reminded that Lynne brought up the point to watch about putting your sailors name on the posts. It's possible that bit of information could be used to dig into your homesick SR. (nothing personal to any RDC's that might be reading this, but we are all Momma Bears. We tend to be protective of our young!)

I am fortunate to be able to see my sailor and a buddy on Christmas Day. His family here at home can't go up to see him as they all have their holiday plans already firmed up. So we are getting together next Saturday to make some of his favorite foods to have for Christmas. (My cousin has opened her heart and home to us to be able to spend the day with these 2 young men.) We are also..(crazy) taking his Belgian Shepherd up to see him. That is his gift from all of us.
We all have to remember this probably won't be the last time they will be away from loved ones and home at a holiday season. It will just be the hardest! For them and for us. Think about helping out a homeless shelter near your home for the holidays. It might make you feel closer to your own SR knowing you are helping someone else who needs TLC at the holidays. Or check with a local animal shelter and see if you could donate some time to help them. I know we are all stressed in our own lives and daily routines and feeling sorry for ourselves and our loved ones is magnified during the holidays. use your energy in a positive manner! Ok off my soapbox......

blessedsailorsmom, I know how you feel, I think as parents and grandparents we always try to "fix" things for everyone and smooth everything, at any sacrifice to ourselves. Sadly, not so true of others. My husband always tells me "Don't expect anything and you won't be disappointed". People have their own agendas. I may sound bitter but for the most part that has been my family experience. Our recruit is also sounding very down, he called his girlfriend and I think it was hard for him to say goodbye on the phone. Don't forget they have very little free time now and are stressed, let's just pray they stay stong and do well. I think this year we all want Christmas over already to get closer to PIR. We have to send our love and encouragement continually. Again, I'm sorry for the lack of support you received, don't beat yourself up. Keep being the good mom.

Its okay to vent blessed and you have every right to be angry. You probably checked plane tickets today and Saturday and Sundays tend to have the most expensive palne tickets so try again Tuesday...weird huh...and try flying the person out late late Christmas day because that is the cheapest day to fly...I don't know if that will help but you can try.

Its funny that in the situations like these you learn who your real friends are and you learn some things you didn't know about family. Holidays are hard for everyone and people get caught up in their own individual things and they forget sometimes about what I think is the real meaning of Christmas, which is giving of oneself to help another. I am so sorry your son is having to learn about this kind of disappoint at his age...however he is also going to get a tremendous gift this year...he is going to learn he has a wonderful Navy family full of brothers and sisters who are going to rally around him. He is going to meet extended family in the form of Vets and people who have sailors who are overseas or deployed have chosen to spend their holidays with your recruits because they can't be with their own. He will be with family...it won't be the family of his birth...it will be the family of his choice...the Navy. It will be different...but I hope each of you will try to help your recruits see it in tha way. That is how I got through Thanksgiving with my son down in Pensacola!
