we recieved a letter from our gal , she sounded discouraged but also committed. They recently went to dental this past week or so , she had to get 3 fillings, but in the process the dentist chipped her front tooth by accident so now we have to worry about that being fixed , thank goodness its the navy's bill. She also said that she will be grad and go. I dont know the details of that, but I still plan on going to PIR just need to get my loan approved and arrangements made. IT will be worth the money even if for PIR and an hour.

I love this site! We all are different people coming from different backgrounds. But we really aren't all that different. I love that we can come together to share and support our sailors. I heard (not sure how true this is) that if they make through weeks 4 & 5 they will be OK. The fourth week is starting we are in the home stretch. Take care all of you and have a great weekend!

Redsmom Good idea about the praying...not just for our own but all the SR's! I agree with the team mentality that the RDC's are trying to instill...they need to have each other's backs and we need to encourage them to do that & to lift up those who are having trouble. Our son has played soccer for many years and many a practice had to run because someone on the team messed up...but they all had to! I can tell you being a Soccer Mom all these years that even the people he can't stand on the team he still passes the ball to them & I only hear about it after the game, never do I see any of them take their personal difference on to the field. Ok that is my"sermon" for the day! I'll leave you with a quote from Mia Hamm who was part of the the US Women's National Soccer Team that won 2 World Cups...famously known as the 91'rs! >"I am a member of a team, & I rely on the team, I defer to it & sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual is the ultimate champion!"

Good morning ladies! I definitely said a prayer for all the SR at boot camp for continued success in all their future endaevors. I know this is a tough time for them all, including my own. I have always encouraged my children to take it one day at a time and if mistakes are made to learn from them and always move forward.

Ugh--this is getting crazy! I dreamed they kicked my son out of the Navy because he didn't want to cook dinner for his division!!!

Thank you again Lynne for reminding us that this is their journey. My SR said that there are a lot of "young" 18 year olds, and that several SR spend time telling everyone else to be quiet but can't maintain the silence themselves. Lynne is very right. And if you really watch sport coaches for football, basketball, volleyball, they spend time breaking the kids and building them back as a team. The team needs to function like a ... well,.... like a zipper. All the teeth need to be straight and able to interlock with all the other teeth or else the zipper won't work. Sometimes there will be a tooth that needs more help that the others, Sometimes the entire zipper needs to be reconstructed. I am a Team Manager for several teams at my school in a program called Destination ImagiNation. VERY team oriented, but they focus on strengths. The team of sailors that we are creating needs to be very team functional. Whether they are best friends or just tolerate each other, they need to know that they can rely on each other FOR EVERYTHING. Bear with your sailor recruits when they vent to you about "troublemakers". They will come in contact with many of those types of people in their lives. Don't we all?
We are a team as well. Be Proud. We are earning our "stripes" as well.

Have the news on this morning, it's snowing in Chicago, this is what has me worried now (like I need something else to worry about) Flight delays? What if it's bad weather and other cities have delays, guess PIR goes on no matter what. Driving in January on unfamiliar roads is another on my list.

Lynn, I too have been hearing this frustration from my Son in his letters and I am sure that there isn't a recruit that hasn't had his or her moments. We all just need to encourage them and encourage eachother through this. They will all be better Sailors for it. There is a reason for everything and I believe that every little hiccup whether our Sailor caused it or another did they will all grow stronger because of it. Thanks for sharing what your Sailor told you. Can't wait for my phone call, I am sure my Sailor has had his moments too. My Sailor was never the tidiest in fact far from it, so I am reasonably sure that has gotten him trouble. I think they are all starting from scratch and are definitely going to make mistakes.

Okay folks...I can hear the frustration in your voices as you talk about the "troublemakers" in your divisions and how it is impacting your recruits. Let me try and help you with this. I am not going to tell you there aren't some recruits who aren't terrible, awful people, however in general the "crimes" they are committing are not so bad. Yes, I am sad to admit, that my son did in fact commit one of those crimes which got his division PT and most likely at some point your recruit will as well, although they tend not to mention that to mom and dad. Yes, my son, when pressed by me, confessed to leaning on the bulkhead. Exasperated I said, "what the heck did you do that for, I mean really, your whole division paid the price." He saidm" geez mom get a grip, I leaned against the wall." They get up between 4 and 5 AM. During the day they rarely sit except for chow and class. They are on the move all the time. They are not allowed to touch the wall and must stand straight and tall, looking forward, being caught leaning against a wall or looking side to side will cause a division to get IT. Talking is also not allowed for most of the day and certainly not when eating, eating time is for eating. I am telling you this so you understand that when your recruits say "troublemakers" that are repeating what the RDCs are saying and the trouble being caused is really minimal and is made to be a bigger deal for the purpose of breaking them down to rebuild them as a team. I hope that makes sense. You will also hear some of them just can't march, can't fold, iron, keep their racks straight...etc. Trust me at the point they are...none of them do things right...it is part of the process. So hang in there and keep encouraging them to encourage each other.
