Liberty Following PIR

I'm sure this has been discussed many times before BUT does anybody know how much liberty our new "sailors" typically receive following PIR.  Trying to finalize our flights.  Outbound is set.  Going back-n-forth on when to set our return.  Don't want to cut our visit short but don't want to stay if we can't be with  our daughter.  The "FAQ's" I printed says that "if a recruit is staying at Great Lakes for "A" school will check in right after graduation.  They wil find out their exact liberty hours after they have checked into their school." This info doesn't help me now. Would any of you Mom's who have heard anything or have "been there, done that"  please share what you know.  Thanks so much!

I would book to leave on Sun. afternoon, because you might not know until the last min. My son is going to A school there also. He is in a different ship and division but I booked our hotel until Monday. Just to be on the safe side. My son THINKs he will get liberty after he checks in. Our other son did Boot Camp last year. We did not know when he was leaving until after graduation, He flew out the next morning at 6am. We got to spend the day of graduation with him. Then off to S.C.  I hope this helps?

@ jam's mom (Ship 04 Div 803) and Peggy 09/14 - thanks for the info.  Sunday afternoon/evening or Monday it is!  I know for a fact I would not survive all of this without my Navy 4 Moms family.  Just want all of you to know how much I care for each and everyone of you.  SR is doing well.  Passed the PT, swim test, and 1st written exam.  Had a little trouble in the "bed making" department...took 3 tries to get that right!  Which is really no surprise to me...don't think she ever made her bed at home!  Wonder if she'll make her bed when she comes home on leave?!!

I happened to have PIR on Memorial Day weekend though and so it is not common. But my sons plans changed on the Tuesday before PIR. We had a Thursday PIR. I booked through until Sunday luckily as he got two extra days of liberty.

@ Peggy 09/14 - I'm in  complete agreement with you.  Don't know where I'd be without this site.  Probably in a psych ward somewhere!  I've printed out several things and have started a folder.  Way too much info to keep straight in my head and don't want to forget anything!  My husband saw me going thru my folder the other night and just started laughing and gave me a "that's my girl'!  My hubby, who is Navy vet,  has said more than once that "we never had this kind of family involvement or support when I was in".  So, if he is picking up on this just from me babbling, I think it speaks volumes as to how important this site and my Navy 4 Moms family is to me. I have my scarf, too.  Kept it in the plastic bag it arrived in.  I can't wait to wear it and see my "family" in the drill hall.  I'm going to be so proud and so happy to see my SR but it's going to totally rock to see my "sisters" too!  Plan on taking lots of pictures!

My SR told me he could leave as late as Tuesday but won't find out until week 6 or 7.  He said he is hoping to at least get Sunday.  So he obviously has no idea what is going on either.  I booked the extra few days at the hotel just in case and can cancel if anything changes.  I also booked Southwest where I can easily change my flight if necessary due to this.

I do not think there is a typical. I read somewhere before that if staying in Great lakes they will go from PIR to A school and check in might take upto five hours. Then the new trainer will decide what they get.

So it is the same as graduation we can plan somewhat but nothing is set in stone and can change at the last minute anyway

IF they are staying at Great Lakes for A School, they will have about an hour with you immediately after graduation (gives you time to pick up their pictures or shop in the NEX). Then they have to go pack up their gear and move to their new barracks (which is about a half mile away). They will be able to call you later and let you know when they can leave and you can wait for them at the gate of the base (not the bootcamp base, but the other gate). It takes until around 3 to 5 pm before they will be able to check out of their new barracks and make the walk to the gate. If you need to kill time, there is a Naval museum you can wander through outside the gate.

They should then have the weekend of liberty, although they will need to be back in their barracks by around 2100 each night (allow plenty of time as it's a long walk for them back to barracks). The next day, they may need you to check them out, which means they will walk to the gate, you will go into the bldg. to get a car pass (if you have a car), then drive back to their barracks to sign them out. You will need to wait for them to get your car pass. Expect lots of waiting around.

When asking for the car pass, you can get one for the entire weekend, so you don't have to go through the process all over again the next day.

Warning: This was our experience, but it may be different from barracks to barracks. and again, be patient as there are lots of procedures. LOTS OF PROCEDURES!

If they are headed out to another base for A School, you should have some time with them, then there is a good chance they will be flown out very early in the morning. You can go to the airport, and with their information get a pass to go to the gate area where you can spend time with your SR before they are shipped? (flown) out.

One more tip, if you are flying in, look into the Milwaukee airport. Just a bit further drive, but flights may be cheaper, and rental cars definitely are. Enterprise has cars there starting around $14.

Not to mention, a lot less traffic than going through either O'Hare or Midway.

I have a few other tips if anyone is interested.
