I am having my first time of son away for Thanksgiving as well. He is scheduled to be done with "A" school before Christmas (will see... not doing this Holding Your Breath...will be VERY happy if he is on schedule...but stuff happens...especially with so many holidays in between now and then...they lose training days.

He is trying to find out if he will be one of the ones that go home. Some have to stay and stand watch. One mom reported her son on dumpster watch of all things! So, if he did get delayed I would rather hold out for Christmas for him to spend his money. If it doesn't than...oh well.

Some can't come home...it's on their dime I believe and if you live all the way across country...well...you know what airfare is like. Again, we will miss him but would rather he saved the money...geez, with how the airports are during Thanksgiving....he would spend most of his time traveling anyways.

I hadn't heard anything and was wondering that myself.  We are hoping that he is able to come home at Christmas...his grandparents were gone last Christmas and they will be home for this one...We would love to have him home for a little time.

Before my boyfriend left, the recruiter told him that A school shuts down for Christmas and the officers go home and it is mandatory for him to go home as well.  He said 2 weeks at home but I'm not sure how definite that is.  Did anyone else hear this about A school?

Dianne, I hope that is not the case for my Sailor. I would rather have Christmas than Thanksgiving. I think she will get Christmas as well because she had to work last Christmas. At least that is what I am hoping for :-)

Residence Inn has full kitchens.

I'm jealous, Lala!  I asked my son if he could come home for Thanksgiving but at his Command, you choose Thanksgiving or Christmas.  Can't do both, so he will be home for Christmas. So, this will be the 3rd Thanksgiving he has missed with us  :-(  But so happy that you will have your sailors and extras!

Yes, I agree with Lala.  You should book your flight out on Sunday if at all possible.  The sailors leave from Midway or Ohare.  And for you all, many times it is cheaper to fly into Milwaukee, which is 45 minutes from GL and an easier drive (no traffic).  SW flies there...so no change fee/first 2 bags checked for free.

Remember, things change with the Navy.  Even if your SR finds out he/she is flying out the next day, that could change.  It has for some in the past (FTLW being one of them).  It is so sad to see ladies have to post that they had to say goodbye to their sailors when they had more liberty because they had booked back home too soon.  So stay until Sunday if possible. There is lots of sightseeing you can do in Chicago if your sailors leave out on Sat.

they don't all go out of the same airport so there is no way to know for sure. I would guess that more leave from ohare but that may not always be true. If I were you I would book your flight as late that day as possible or maybe even stay until Sunday if you can so you will get as much time with him as possible.

I booked Spring Hill Suites call direct it was cheeper 79.00 per night. Ask for Navy grad rate. No kitchens however.

Does anyone know which airport they are sent out of to go to A school?  I would like to book the same airport so I am able to spend more time with my boyfriend.  Thanks!

Good evening everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend :-) We had a Sweet 16 party this weekend, went on the Parkway this afternoon looking at leaves and I just got off the phone with my Sailor. They get to come home for Thanksgiving and they are bringing 2 extra Sailors. One from Washington State. My sailor/daughter is going to find out if their moms are on this site :-) I am so excited they get to come home.

Even with driving all over the Parkway looking at the Fall colors the prettiest tree was in my front yard :-)
