N4M's Community Guidelines

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Thanks so much I was not aware that sailors who would be attending A School outside of Chicago only had those few liberty hours after PIR. Do you know of any good phone cards that they are able to use to call , and where I can get one . Is he able to get one in NEX

Elizabeth:  I have heard the the bus transportation system in Great Lakes is not so great.   Is your sailor staying in GL for training after Bootcamp or will he be flying out?  If he is flying out, most likely you will only have PIR day with him, he will have to be back on RTC around 8 pm that night and will be bussed to the airport later that night.  You can meet him at the airport and wait with him until he departs.  You could maybe use Sarge's shuttle service to/from PIR ($3/pp each way---your sailor can return with you)....and he also provides transportation to the airport for those wanting to wait with their sailors.

If your sailor will be staying in GL for A School and you are staying the weekend, it would get more costly of course.  But were there's a will, there's a way  Keep saving as much as you can.....

As far as finding a potential "roommate", once ellen opens up the Discussion Forum on this page, you may want to start a discussion looking for someone to share the expense of a hotel room.  I know ladies in the past have done this....in the meantime, you can post on here that you would be interested in doing this and if anyone would be interested, ask that they please friend request you.  You could talk more privately then.

I hope it works out for you.  I know many are financially stretched these days and making the trip to see their new sailors can really tax the finances.  Glad you are saving all you can right now.

Teddiboo09 - When your Sailor departs RTC depends on where they are going to A school.

Those attending A school in GL (up the street at the Main base) depart RTC directly after graduation to check in over there. It can take 3-5 hours to do so and then you may pick them up for Liberty for the rest of the day. No overnight Liberty. They will also have Liberty on Saturday and Sunday. Same thing no overnight.

If your Sailor is attending A school anywhere else they will fly out usually in the wee hours of Saturday morning. So you will have daytime Liberty with them directly after PIR (occasionally, there could be a delay for various reasons, but it is not common). They will return to RTC that night and prepare to leave for their airports. The Sailors are all bused to the airports at the same time regardless of when their flight leaves. Only your Sailor can release their itinerary(flight times airport) to you. They will get this information a day to a few days before PIR. So you won't really know this until PIR day. This is confidential and not to be posted publicly as it is forward movement of personnel and breaks OPSEC (Operational Security).

Occasionally, those flying out will not do so until Sunday morning and so receive an extra day of Liberty. This is not common but does happen. Usually, flight availability is the reason but there are other factors. For this reason we will often advise that you stay until late Sunday if you have the time and funds available. Not everyone can do this but we just like to give you a "heads up" on the possibilities. :-)

Elizabeth - Here is a link to a PAGE with info about the Metra Train. There is a station that is right across the street from RTC.

Metra in relation to Union Station

There are links to the Metra website, links to maps and taxi info, link to PACE bus system is within one of them.

I don't know ANYTHING about taking public transportation personally but I hope that helps.

Diannep I would most likely be going in train, since it's the most affordable, I was also wan ting a decent hotel that would be not to expensive , as for transportation around the city I would like to maybe ride the bus , I'm guessing chicago has a big public transportation system I don't know if there is any passes for 2 people . Do you know where I can get in touch with a "girl " who needs a "roommate" for the PIR

Hello all I'm a bit confused ,so my SR graduates on 12/4 and I'm planning on staying there the whole weekend , but I just read that he might not stay until Sunday that he might leave Saturday. If he were to leave Saturday where would he leave to?
Comment by diannep on October 20, 2015 at 3:35pm

submarine:  Most likely he will be flying out the next day, although occasionally they leave on Sunday.  So....if you can plan your trip home on Sunday, you can visit with your sailor at the airport on Saturday!  They normally hold for a while (varies in length of time) when they first arrive on an A School base.  The A School bases will be going on Stand Down most likely towards the middle of December.  That would mean that there is a chance your sailor could come home for some of Christmas break.

Elizabeth:  That's a hard one.  Would you fly?  Hotels vary in price ... you could google different hotels in the area to see the difference in costs....many offer a discount if you call them directly and ask for the Navy Graduation rate.  Food expense would be up to you and how much you/your sailor eat and what type of food..  If driving, can you bring some food with you?  Some of the hotels have small kitchens in them.  Sometimes those traveling alone may want to "share" a hotel room with another person also traveling single for PIR.  The sailors have no overnights so it would just be you and your roommate at night.....

I was wondering if any one can tell me about how much money I would have to save to make the whole trip ( including hotel , food , transportation around the city ) I am trying my best to budget but I've never planned a trip and I really want to be there that day for my boyfriend. It will most likely just be me coming that day .

Received my sons letter last night - excited! Trying to find out before I book our flights if we should stay for the weekend - I heard he may fly out to training on Saturday Dec 5 so I will want to fly home too. Anyone know when training will start at the sub base in Groton Ct following the 12/4 PIR?

It's almost the end of week two. Just want to send good thought to everyone missing their SR. Hopefully this coming weekend will be the one with phone calls for all...
