WOO-HOO on Sailor calls!

The reason I say ..."(and I feel this way at all times not just when things get amped in the world situation)," is because it is a good idea to get into practice now, at the beginning of your loved ones career...that way when things amp up in the world...or your loved one deploys, or can't give you any information about what they are doing...it won't be such a shock or feel so strange. It will be more "normal" for you.

It takes some training on our part as well...it took me years to learn things. Some through instruction...and some through "osmosis" LOL.

OPSEC has to do with OPerational SECurity...the operations of the military. Ship movement, what the ship is carrying, future ports etc. Specific dates of movement of ships and personnel, even cropped photos of deployed loved ones (the data can be extracted out or brought up with software).

So, photos of loved ones at PIR kind of don't fall under that category.

However, it would fall under PERSEC PERonal SECurity. At least for me it would. This is my personal opinion (and I feel this way at all times not just when things get amped in the world situation), I don't post pictures of loved ones in uniform publicly.

Most Social Media sites (FB especially and I am not bagging on FB even though I don't use it) have you use your real name. I would strongly advise you NOT to post your N4M's name on your FB page or on any of their PIR groups. Never post your personal email or phone numbers on any social media.

NOTHING is secure, not ANY social Media. I don't care what they say about "secret" or "invite only" groups or pages. All someone has to do is copy and paste what you post and make it public...and I have seen it done. ALWAYS with negative results.

You can only try to make it harder for anyone to figure out who you are on some. I am "anonymous" as I can be on here. I do post some personal stuff to my closest "friends" on here but even then am careful and have never posted my last name. I am not perfect about security but I do try...

Bottom line, I am going to say that if you are feeling the least bit "uncomfortable" with it...go with your gut feeling.

As I have gotten older I am learning (it's still a process LOL) to trust my gut...Spidey sense more. Also, if I can't say "yes" whole heartedly then it's a "no"...saves me a lot of grief in the end :-)

I have a question regarding OPSEC.  If I take pictures at PIR, which obviously I'm going to, is it best not to post anything on social media until after I get it home or is it best not to post anything at all period.  I can share them with family via text message or email. I just wanted some guidance given this morning's new about ISIS.  Thanks!

FTLW...oh my. I am sure you were freezing!  The weather in the northern states can change drastically in just a few hours (sometimes even minutes).
