Take practice pictures before PIR as well once inside Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall. Mine came out dark...I think it's all that grey paint LOL

ONLY take pictures inside the Visitors Center and within the Drill Hall. Phtos of the Grounds or in any other building are not permitted and you risk having your camera taken away and all photos deleted...plus, your new Sailor will get in trouble for it (they are acting as your sponsor on base as they have put you on their Access List)

There are museum like displays along the way In the VC to the Security Checkpoint. I remember a China Cabinet was up to the right of it with Photos from the Division. You'll probably see Dog handlers as well.

TIP for PIR:

I sat near the top on the bleachers great view...got an end seat too as I hate to climb over people. Couldn't just sit there, had to walk around...and I don't know WHAT was up but we were HOT at PIR. It was end of May (it rained) but even then people have always reported being cold!

I still brought a shawl that I could fold up and sit on...tush gets cold on metal benches and it just seeps in!

Don't set anything down on the bench that is thin like a camera, cell phone, etc. The floors of the bleachers are solid except underneath the seats there are openings just wide enough and about a foot (?) long for modern day devices to fall through...it is like a black hole...you won't get it back.

I used carabiners on my purse to attach things too. Don't forget binos if you have them! Wal-Mart sells them.

Oh and they sell the Sailors hat (mens style), aka lid, aka "dixie cup" in a kiddie size for $5. They'll want to wear mommy's or daddy's hat and this is not allowed.

The walk from the PIR side of Base to the NEX side is a distance.

I was there in May of 2011 and it was sunny and warm the first day. By the end of the weekend it was raining and thundering at the AP going home. It was so cold one AM when I went to get my Sailor at the NEX. I was directed to park in the Parking Structure for PIR and had to walk allllll the way across base. I was in Flip flops and short sleeves as it "didn't seem that bad". I am a SoCal gal...LOL

One of the Security asked me, "Aren't you cold?"...with a "look" on his face.

"I am now!"...

My SR and her bunkmate (we adopted) are in one of the farthest ships from the Chapel.  My SR is a Minnesota girl and her bunkmate is from SC...I really felt bad for her bunkmate. That is a long walk in the cold even when you ae used to it.

I CAN'T WAIT TILL FRIDAY!!!

Whew....talk about timing....Im happy that your SR made it back in time.  So many SR's were still walking briskly back, as I was parked (with my car running) at the chapel parking lot around 7:15 hugging, and saying our "see you laters" (no good byes - not for us.. Good bye seems like its forever - sounding)   My Sr didn't want to be late either.  The (many 6+) busses were still pulling in and dropping off the SR's close to NEX.  Which that alone to the chapel is a walk.

Visiting during Thanksgiving sure put everything into perspective, with where things are and how far they are to get where you need to be.  Its ironic how things tend to feel further, cause of the cold.  LOL..

Hope everyone has safe travels!  Congratulation's to you and your SR  soon to be SAILORS!!

Thank you splash!

Whew, good for her!

Yes folks, as you can see it is very important that they get back very early.

That is correct on the not running...can't even double-time it either. They must walk back to their Ships. It's a good twenty to twenty-five minutes from the Chapel to the farthest Ships

I was oneo the moms that was there for Thanksgiving. We left our hotel 1 hour before my SR had to be back. We wee 10 mins away. She barely made it with 1 minute to spare. There were many SR's in vehicles behind us that got out and ran to the gate. They cannot run once inside the gate.

diannep - Im planning on getting there and in line super early!!  I don't think I'll be able to sleep at all, the night before, due to the excitement!!

When I picked up my SR for Thanksgiving there were soo many SR's and their family members.  So its a plan to be in line at least an hour or so before curfew.  The traffic was forever, and I did see (as a few others posted) SR's with their family members getting out of their vehicles and walking to the chapel.   It was quite cold too.  Anything to make it back in time, and safely!  It was a day we shared together and we both will never forget!  Treasured memories, forever!
