Thanks for the quick response everyone. Michellex2 my SR is in Division 029.
As far as monetary gifts. It is not on the list of "no-no's" on what not to bring back onboard RTC on the Rules for Liberty. However, the reason I would discourage them is because of theft. I know it is not a pleasant thing to talk about right now but it is an issue.
The Recruits don't have cash onboard RTC (they only advice a very small amount before they go). They are issued a NEX card with an amount on it (taken from their future pay) for necessities at BC.
However, I know how your Mother is feeling...this is her Grandbaby :-) And Grandparents deal with REAL MONEY (gasp! LOL) and that's what they like to do. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy just picturing that :-) !
I suggest the same thing. Have her give it to him and then hold onto it until you can give it to him. I am getting that you won't be able to go to the AP either? If so, then mail it to him or a check later on at A school.
aossanna - At PIR they make accommodations for folks with wheelchairs. They are allowed to sit on deck and one family member may sit with them. So, I know your mother is not in a wheelchair but I am thinking if you ask security about this when you are checking in maybe they can accommodate her the same way...allow a chair for her and you to sit on deck.
aossanna- they do have handicap seating available in the front of each division (no climbing on bleachers). I am not sure if your SR will be allowed to take the cash back to GL after Liberty. I would assume he would not and you would need to give it to him at the airport. You can always let her give it to him and then just hold onto it until you see him at the airport. My SR is also going to Pensacola. I hope to see you at the Meet & Greet. We are Division 30, which division is your SR?
Morning! I have a couple of questions. I am traveling to PIR with my 87 year old mom, she is on the guest list. She has a difficult time climbing and wondering if there is reserved setting for elders so they do not have to climb the bleachers. Also, she wants to give my SR a crisp $50.00 bill, I think a gift card would be better. We are unsure if she will be able to tolerate the early am trip to the airport to meet him. Can he take cash or a gift card back to GL after Liberty? He heads out to Pensacola for A school, and as i said, I just don't know if we can make it to the airport to give it to him then. Thanks for your help. The site has been a Godsent, thank you all for the wonderful support.
My SR (now sailor) also stayed in GL for A School. We only had about 5 minutes with him after PIR before he insisted he had to leave to get processed out of RTC and into his school. He called us about 4:30 and he had to be back by 10 (we brought him back around 9). We dropped him off at the visitor center and he walked back to his ship. If you want to drive them on base through the Main Gate you need to be early as there was a line. It is freezing in Chicago so we opted to drive him back on the rest of the days that he had liberty. When you go to pick them up in the morning, they will meet you at the Visitor Center and then you have to drive on base to their ship to sign them out for the day. You only need your Sailor and the driver's ID to get on the base - no one else in the car needs to provide anything.
Since he graduated last week I wanted to get everyone as much information as possible. My other son is in Div. 30 and he will be flying out to Pensacola so this weekend will be different than last for us.
ROSE/Kimberly: Although some in the past have been allowed to watch the PIR Livestream in the Chapel on base, it is not a guarantee. RTC encourages all extras to stay off base and meet up with their sailors later. However, we know that some extras in past groups have been allowed into the Chapel---absolutely NO extras will be allowed in PIR Hall to see the live ceremony though.
Kimberly: Since yours are your young children, they may be allowed into the Chapel for the Livestream. If that is the case, they could see your sailor after PIR concludes briefly before he moves over to A School base. I definitely think it would be worth it for your sons to go up for PIR weekend and agree with Bug. Even if for some reason they need to stay back at the hotel to watch the Livestream there, they would have the weekend to spend with their brother since GL A School students have Daytime Liberty throughout the weekend! It would be a wonderful experience for them!
I know only 3 can attend the graduation ceremony, but is there a place on the base that others in our family can view the graduation?
*Write, not wrote!
Bug: Yes! Many in past groups have done this and it is a great idea! Wrote the names BIG ENOUGH so all can see them!
michelle: Thanks so much for stopping in to share with these ladies! I know they greatly appreciate it! Congrats on your new sailor and blessings to him in his Navy future!
