While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Comment by Taxmom on October 28, 2014 at 12:05pm: One more for ship 13, Div 043. Received the box last Friday and the form letter yesterday. I couldn't figure out the rolled up pants either so the first mystery of boot camp is now explained. Eric will be going to nuke school in Charleston.

Rating- is the Occupational Speciality that they will train for.

"Leave is earned time off. Every sailor earns 2.5 days a month, which adds up to 30 days a year. To take leave, the sailor puts in a special request form, aka a chit, and has it signed off by his immediate chain of command. Once the sailor receives leave papers from Personnel, he then can travel out of the immediate area. SOMETIMES, sometimes a sailor can borrow forward on his unearned leave. This is called "going in the hole". Most commands frown on this, as the sailor won't have leave on the books later. The sailor then has to decide when taking leave is going to be to his best advantage.

Liberty is regular time off. This is normally weekends and holidays, not to exceed 72 hours. Four day weekends are 96 hours, the sailor must have special permission to take all four days depending on their command and duty rotation. Sailors cannot leave the immediate area while on liberty. Each base/school/ship sets different definitions of local area. I've seen as low as 50 miles and as high as 400. Plane trips on liberty are a big no-no. The sailor must be able to return to their command if recalled during that time."

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on October 27, 2014 at 11:22pm: That's correct, it does depend on their A school. Most Commands have "Holiday Stand Down" time. Two sometimes three weeks depending when Christmas and New Years falls in the week. IF your new Sailor gets Leave (Leave and Liberty are different. I will post a blurb on the difference) they will only get time off for one Holiday not both. They also have to have enough Leave accrued. Sailors (all Servicemembers actually) receive 2.5 days of Leave a Month. So, yours will have five days Leave accrued after BC. They can request to go "in-the-hole" and borrow forward on future Leave...but most Commands frown on this as they will not have Leave "in the books" later.

All of the above is subject to the "needs of the Navy". They have to put in a chit (paperwork) to request Leave and it may not be granted.

Some may also want to save that Leave for future use...such as time home before going out into the Fleet or being deployed.
