Debbie, be careful when checking airfares.  I found when I checked for my son, the military "discount" was much more expensive than some of the other sites, like travelocity, expedia, etc.  Also, if your SR can fly Southwest they usually have pretty good fares.

As I understand it, the SR's are not actually allowed to work at their recruiting station until after they have graduated from their A school.  It may have changed, but that's what I was told last year by our son's recruiter.

Got a couple of phone calls today because they kept getting interrupted - spent the day at a firehouse and they got a call while we were on the phone.  Called back, talked a little and said everything is fine.  Only has a cold, not anything more serious.  I told him I heard that he can have his laptop and cell once he gets to the airport to head to A school (I hope that's true - that's what I read before).  Also said he should get 5 days leave after arriving at A school, and that if he does some work at the local recruiting office they'll cut it down to him only using 2 days of leave.  Does anybody know anything about a military discount?  Does he need to call the airline directly to get that?

So glad that some got calls today....and the text pik was a huge bonus!  YAH!

In VA with my sailor son....first time I have been with him for Thanksgiving in 2 yrs.  Missed the past 2 because of the NAVY.  Have just been here a few hours, but fun so far.  Plan to enjoy Williamsburg tomorrow....his buddy will join us for the day.  He is a history buff and will take us through Jamestown, Yorktown, etc....can't wait!  Hoping his buddy will enjoy a bit of family time with us too, even though I'm not his family.  But we are all a part of the NAVY family, so in a sense, we ARE family!

Got another call this afternoon...said he's doing well and that the division is coming together slowly but surely.  Can't wait for PIR...3 weeks from tomorrow!!

My day is made...got a 30 minute phone call from my SR! And a txt picture!!! Tell your SR to take a picture if he gets a cell phone. The person that let our son use theirs took a picture and sent it to us :-)! I'm still crying!!!!

Thanks everybody for the good wishes!  I hope to hear from my SR today, and an EXTRA bonus would be to hear from my other son at Army BC in South Carolina (but the wife comes first LOL - she'll let me know how he's doing).  Safe travels everyone!

Got one 15 minute call from him while in the van or bus...he said he can probably call again later.  So good to hear his voice.  Said they did Marlinspike yesterday and thinks it went okay, because they didn't get yelled at.
