Ladies, my son PIR'd on 12/17 of last year, but unfortunately they are doing it differently this year. My son was allowed to come directly home from GL with us after PIR and did not have to report to A school first. We were told to book them refundable tickets and they are VERY expensive. I don't see how you could book a ticket ahead of time in your situation, since you won't know if or when they will be permitted their leave. I do know that if they are granted their leave, they will need a complete detailed itinerary. I would suggest that those who can, use Southwest airlines for their flights. (I do realize that those going to Pensacola, unfortunately cannot use SW as they do not fly there) For those who can use SW, the good thing about them is that they will not charge for their baggage (even those most airlines do not charge for military, there are some who have tried to do that in the past) Southwest also usually will not charge for a change in flight, if it is necessary, where some airlines can charge as much as $150 or more to change a flight. The bases are on stand down during the holiday, so most sailors are permitted their leave, but unfortunately, it sounds like your SR's will have to make their arrangements once they do get to A school.
Good morning, diannep. Good morning, Moms.
Allison & Debbie - My son and another from his div is also going to Pensacola. We'll just have to wait until they get there and see if they are granted leave. That airline ticket is going to be EXPENSIVE! But, I don't care...just want him home for Christmas.
Lala - I am praying that everyone gets out of that situation soon and that they are all okay.
LoveMySailor: They give them much more than flu shots. They get a whole bunch of vaccinations, etc. Plays havoc with their immune system for a while and most get sick. I hated that for my "healthy" son who does no meds and never has. But no way around it! Just too many vaccinations at once, in my opinion.
Good morning, all!
Good morning ladies, I hope everyone is having a good weekend. I know those who got calls are floating on cloud 9 right now :-)
Please keep our Rescue Squad and some missing Boy Scouts in your prayers. The boys have been missing in the mountains near the Parkway between Brevard and Asheville NC. One of the rescue workers has fallen and believed to have broken his back. My son is on the rescue squad and has been gone on this rescue mission since yesterday evening. He did send me a message to let me know he is okay because he knew I would hear on the news that someone was hurt. I am glad he did let me know because I would be freaking out. Thanks so much for your prayers.
Allison, i spoke with my SR, he PIRs 12/16, he said he'll get liberty weekend, then report to A-School im assuming late sunday/early monday like 2 AM.... maybe later.. but anyways he said he'll accumulate his leave then he'll leave to come home im assuming around christmas, cuz everything shuts down...
i did get a call, we talk for 36 minutes, my SR was slightly sick too, cough and cold... i think it's cuz they give them flu shots or something when they arrive
allison: I'm sure that Betsy will be happy to answer this. Her son PIRed the week of Christmas and went to Pensacola, so she will have good info!
Thanks for your support, everyone! No letter today, maybe a call tonight or tomorrow. And Allison, thanks for letting me know that your daughter will fly to Pensacola on the 17th, because I would think my son will also. I'm assuming they can put in for leave once they get on base, but I'm not sure - I do know that the Pensacola facility is closed over the holidays so they can't stay there (I don't think).
