Lala, is the rule that they have to have finished A School in order to have the recruiter office work not count as their leave days?  Seems that someone had told me that a long time ago, but wasn't sure.

Comment by Jajajo on November 13, 2011 at 10:47am

I totally forgot about the recruiting office thing.  Thanks Lala :)

Good morning Navy Family, I wish we all knew and understand exactly how this leave and liberty will work. But I guess we won't know until it actually happens. But I can tell you if it was one of my kids there now I would want them to be home for Christmas if they had that option at all, even if it meant they went in the hole a little bit on their leave days. I hope you all get to spend Christmas with your Sailors. One thing to remember is that when they come home from A-school on their leave they can work at the recruiters office for 5 days and those days will not count against their leave. So if they have 10 days leave they would only use 5. They have to have the proper paperwork from their A-school and have it filled out by the recruiting office and then make sure it get turned in to their first command or C-school. I know it's all very confusing and I hope it all works out great for you and your soon to be Sailors.

THIS GROUP IS FOR SHIP 11/DIV 018, CORRECT???

Comment by CeliaSews on November 12, 2011 at 7:12pm

My son is going to be a A School in Pensacola for a while...he's a 6-year AEF CTT. So, if he can take the extra time at Christmas, it would definitely be worth it. He won't be taking any leave for a while.

Comment by Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor on November 12, 2011 at 6:02pm

Ladies, I can tell you that last year my son graduated at this time of year and was able to travel home for Christmas.  Our situation was a little different because they did not have to report to A school before taking leave.  But that said, my son used 10 days of his leave time to come home for Christmas, of which 5 days were accumulated during BC and 5 were borrowed from future leave.    He has been in the Navy for a year now and has not been able to use any additional leave time as yet.  He just finished all of his A school training this week,  so he does still currently have over 30 days of leave time accumulated as of now.  If your SR is going to A school for a fairly long time, they will probably not be able to use leave for quite awhile anyway, so it may be worth considering a trip home.  If their A school is short, maybe not worth considering, since they will have to build up those extra days again.

The leave for PIR 12/29 does not affect this TG.

12/16 will be graduating as normal and will be granted whatever liberty they get.

When they get to their A school they may put in for leave...and see if it will be granted. They will only have five accumalted days of leave (2.5 per month)...so anything after that IF granted is borrowing against future leave...not the best idea...you are in a negative balance. Just my opinion as far as that goes.

They are also responsible for their travel costs.

Liberty is a Sailors normal time off. It has a set time to it.Ex: at A school...weekends and after school hours is liberty (you still have to stand watches sometimes though). This weekend my son is getting a four day weekend of liberty becasue of the holiday.

From Anti M's post:

Liberty is regular time off. This is normally weekends and holidays, not to exceed 72 hours. Four day weekends are 96 hours, the sailor must have special permission to take all four days depending on their command and duty rotation.

Leave -  is earned time off.

From Anti M's post:

Leave is earned time off. Every sailor earns 2.5 days a month, which adds up to 30 days a year. To take leave, the sailor puts in a special request form, aka a chit, and has it signed off by his immediate chain of command. Once the sailor receives leave papers from Personnel, he then can travel out of the immediate area. SOMETIMES, sometimes a sailor can borrow forward on his unearned leave. This is called "going in the hole". Most commands frown on this, as the sailor won't have leave on the books later. The sailor then has to decide when taking leave is going to be to his best advantage.

Liberty and leave cannot be combined and the only time leave is granted during "A" school...is during holiday stand down time.
