So, if you take leave...it counts against your leave time.

RTC is the recruits current "command"...and this is the leave time being authorized from them...they are giving them the three options listed in the post below.

cmhs I think FTLW answered the question about 12/16 a few posts below.

QUESTION 1
I want to be clear on this before I get really excited... I'm getting mixed information. My husband is set to graduate on this day, Before I make plans, I know i should wait for his letter but I kind of wanna get the ball in motion. If my h...usband decides to take dec 30- jan 5th will this count toward his leave time? or can he take until Jan 8 and be at his A school command before that date or back in great lakes to fly from there to his A school. I just want to be clear on how all this works. I am VERY new to this. thanks =)See More

QUESTION 2
If a recruit chooses not to take leave and goes on to "A" school as planned, what happens when they get there? Will they start school right away or hang out until other recruits come back after leave?
Wednesday at 8:44pm
U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command QUESTION1 ANSWER: The recruits must all leave RTC on Dec. 29, whether they are going home or to their A School. If they are going home, they are responsible for getting their own transporation to their A School; they do not report back to RTC. And yes, any leave they take counts against their accumulation time.

QUESTION2 ANSWER: If they go to A School, yes, they wait until school resumes on Jan. 8.

FTLW - I went back to FB and read her post again.  Her son implies that he was told he wouldn't lose any leave, because A Schools are on stand down for the holidays. I don't know about that.  Guess we'll just have to be patient and see what our SR's tell us in the mail and/or phone calls.

So, 12/29 graduates are getting leave BUT 12/16 will have to apply for leave when they get to their "A" school. They will only have earned 5 days of leave while in BC...which means they would use it all up if they take the five days. If they "go in the hole" they are borrowing on future leave and have to pay it back (how...IDK), most commands frown on this.

...and of course they have to put in a chit and it has to be granted...it may not happen.

It's hard, but the Sailor has to make a decision when taking leave is to the best of his/herer advantage.

Celia NJ - This is from RTC FB:

Holiday Leave for Recruits graduating Dec. 29

by U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 1:50pm

Holiday leave for Training Group 6 (those graduating Dec. 29) will begin at 1600 (4 p.m.) Dec. 29 and expire at 2359 (11:59 p.m.) Jan. 8. All recruits will depart RTC that same day, whether they are staying at Great Lakes or going out of state for A School. Recruits graduating Dec. 29 will have three options following graduation:

1) Not request leave and go directly to their A School as planned, departing from RTC.

2) They may have someone pick them up and stay within 75 miles of the base. Airline tickets will be issued from Great Lakes to their next command where their A School is located. There will be no reimbursement for local transporation. So, if they go somewhere within 75 miles of the base, they must pay for their own transportation to return to Great Lakes.

3) They depart from RTC and go on leave out of the area. They will do so at their own expense. They are responsible for getting to their A School at their own expense. Once they are at A School, they can then file for a travel claim. They will only receive travel pay at the government rate for what the flight would have cost to ship them from Great Lakes to their A School. So, they are paying for their own flight home and will only receive reimbursement for the flight from home to their A School, and that reimbursement will only be equaled to the cost of what it would cost to fly from Great Lakes to their next command. Should a recruit not graduate for any reason, the command will not reimburse any travel costs.Recruits will be instructed and given the opportunity to purchase their own airline tickets if they choose to go home. Please coordinate/communicate with your recruit if you are going to be purchasing their airline tickets for them. They will instruct you where you will need to send their itineraries here at RTC.

Here is the link to the RTC website as folks may ask questions and updates may be given.

Some people on Facebook started a group for this PIR and 12/29.  One of the moms over there said her son wrote to her that he would have to report to A School after BC and then would be leaving the next day for 10 days leave.  He is going to San Antonio.  I don't know who told him that.  But, I'm going to ask my SR about it in today's letter.  He also said they use SATO, the travel agency on the base to make their travel arrangements.  This is all second hand info, so take it with a grain of salt. :)
