Lala: My son was always listening to music...or singing...before he left! I know it must have been so hard for him too. He used music to relax, and loved singing in the shower! With many shipmates taking showers with him, and their very short showers, I'm sure there was NO SINGING allowed! HA!
JazzyMom: Chicago Midway is further away than Ohare. A harder drive...I agree with Betsy. Milwaukee is the airport of choice for many because it is only a 45 minute drive to GL (Straight interstate), NO TRAFFIC (Chicago is not so blessed in that area!), and an easier airport to get in and out of. Southwest doesn't charge a change fee in addition to their 2 bag policy. They fly into Midway and Milwaukee.
But if the choice is between Ohare and Midway for you, Ohare is closer. The sailors fly out of both Ohare and Midway. So if you have a sailor who will be flying out and you plan on an airport visit with him/her, be sure to book your own flights out later in the afternoon or early evening on Sat. We actually recommend that you all try and stay until Sunday if possible just in case your sailor has extra time. Sometimes flights on Sat. are full and they have to fly out on Sunday. Just remember...CHANGE is the name of the game in the Navy...and this includes travel plans...so be flexible!
My daughter said when she got her wisdom teeth pulled at bootcamp that is was the first time she had heard music since she stepped off the plane. She said it was like heaven lol. Can you imagine 2 weeks or more without any type of music at all? She said she realize how bad she would miss music until she walked into the dental office lol.
Angela, What great letters. That's awesome that you were able to talk with a RDC.
Jazzymom, it's pretty much a matter of your personal preference. We flew into Milwaukee and it was a very easy drive to GL. A lot of people forget about that airport. It's only about 45-50 minutes from GL and pretty much a straight shot. Southwest flies into Milwaukee and you are allowed 2 free checked bags with them. O'Hare has more flights going in and out, thus it's a pretty busy airport.
Does anyone know if it's better to fly into O'Hare or Midway?
Many have their wisdom teeth out...it's not your SRs choice! If they think there may be any trouble with them in the future (like when deployed!), they take them out. Probably the most common procedure done in bootcamp. They get some SIQ and LD time until they are more healed.
Lala - Great sounding dinner!! Got my first letter yesterday too!! He sounds tired - said 905 is a tough division... funny, he isn't liking the food very well, but I expected that, he only likes pizza, cereal and other forms of junk food!! He got his wisdom teeth out as well!! Didn't get that.. Hope everyone has a great day! Thank you to all the veterans who might read this and thank you to the many moms of current and past sailors/soldiers etc..!!
Thanks so much everyone. We are in Wilmington now touring UNC-W tomorrow, had a fantastic dinner tonight of Pecan-encrusted grouper. It was amazing :-) I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.
