N4M's Community Guidelines and OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security)
(Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips)

This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way.

The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

 • Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for your personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Shin splints and stress fractures do happen to some in BC. Not all of those 30 had them I would guess. Recruits are sent home for many other reasons. The military is not for everyone.

Many are not used to marching in boots and on hard flooring/cement. They need to make sure their shoes/boots fit properly and that they lace their boots tight ,not circulation cut off tight, but snug so their feet don't slide in them. But there has to be other physiological reasons going on I am guessing for those that get them real bad,  since some get them and most don't. I do know my son had aches and pains...but I don't think actual shin splints. You'd have to research the two as to the possible causes and possible preventatives. I know a lot of runners get them.

Those that get them in BC are usually retained and allowed to heal. Then they are placed into a new Division or they complete their training while they heal (depends on how far a long they are and how much healing they have to do.) RTC medical deals with this all the time, they are good at it, and I have seen many recover and finish to become Sailors.

They retained your sons friend, but it seems that he was not getting bettter. His sounds very extensive. I pray for healing for him and a smooth transition back into civilian life.

Cards and notes are fine as far as what can be received.

But here is the thing...I would do whatever my recruit requested. For their comfort.

@Felicia -- I know about the musical cards and glitter and all that, just wondered about the 3 x 5 white enveloped note cards and such.  I would never send the other stuff.   He would be mortified and that would end any letters he might send home.  :-)  :-)

Comment by Felicia TEXASNAVYMOM on November 3, 2012 at 4:15pm

@bclmomct...I have read to keep the letter plain.  Keep them in just plain white envelopes.   I have read not to send cards that make sounds, have glitter, or in colored envelopes.  So I just have been sending my son letters in plain jane white mailing envelopes.

I know a mom locally whose son left July 31st.   He went to Highschool with my son.  He was sent home yesterday with fractures in his feet, knees and hips just from Marching.  He had been in the Navy infirmary unit since Sept 4th.   She said they sent home 30 recruits just to Texas yesterday.   :0(      I wish I could talk to my son.    How does something like that happen?   I mean from constant marching??

Comment by bclmomct on November 3, 2012 at 4:01pm

I had a couple of more questions....first what are PIR ribbons?  I see one of our folks on the site is the PIR ribbon mom.   The other question is exactly what are the restrictions on letters, vs cards....my SR seems to be under the impression that anything but a letter in a legal sized envelope will draw attention to himself, something he's been told not to do.  It would be very easy to just slip a note card and envelope in my purse and write a quick note when I'm at work, but he thinks those would be a problem.  Any insight from those whose sons/daughters are out of BC?

Okay, I will make one...since it is one of my "things I do" anyways LOL!

I will have it done in a little while. Have to research and type...and I will post in the PAGES section for now, and provide a link. That way I don't clog up the Main Wall and you all can chose to read or not to read.

I do not want to open up the DISCUSSION FORUM area yet (and post it there) as we have a discrepancy in divisions for this TG. I am hoping that they will update with the correct divisions on Monday.

The discrepancy is that 905 is reporting this PIR date and it is not on the RTC website. Don't worry, this can happen when they skip a week of PIR. This time they skipped two consecutive weeks, something we have not seen before. When they skip a week they double or even triple up on 900 Divisions. There are fifty-two 900 Divisions a Fiscal year.

I urge and uinvite any and all to stay here connect, get info and ask questions. It is easy to change PIR groups on here...not as easy to have to accept a possible later PIR date. :-(
