N4M's Community Guidelines and OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security)
(Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips)

This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way.

The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

 • Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for your personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

I have emailed PAO about weather, entrances and photgraphy for you :-)

Also, keep in mind that you are not allowed past the Parking Garage or the Chapel. Your Sailors will be briefed.

Make sure you read the Proper Public Behavior with your new Sailor in the PAGES section as well. There is etiquette.

Yes, they are very serious about it. While the Maps I have are available to the public they are not actual photos and Mapquest when you zoom in...you can see the picutres are older and only rooftops...no details.

Cleaver6...I am sorry, I mentioned both entrances, excuse my female mind...do you mean the Parking Garage one or that there is a Gate side one?

The Metra Parking is on Ohio (the street you use to get to Gate 8 for PIR). Rather than turn right into the Gate, you continue on and it leads right into the Metra Parking lot. You park, remember the space number, go back and get a ticket from the box (which is back at the entrance) adn place it on your dash. I think it is like $2. (I have included this info in the Discussion.

I will keep that in mind about the photography when I am there at VC.

Yes, I was there just this January for son #2. The one going through PIR on Friday is son #3, Navy son #2.

We followed Sarge's advice and parked at the train station across the street from the hall and walked the approximately 75 yards to the hall entrance. We must have arrived at the entrance at 0610 and that twenty minutes in the 15 degree temp was wonderful. I believe the entrance we walked through is the one you're referring to, FTLW.

The picture taking advice is very real. We saw a flash of light followed by loud shouting as the SP's ran at and almost drew their weapons on an uninformed picture taker.

On the doors...

I have heard that those that enter Midway Hall from the Gate side rather than the Parking Garage side end up in the elements...but I am not sure...that is if there is an entrance over there :-). I am sure there would be as it is a big building but haven't gotten an actual confirmation. I will try to find out.

Cleaver6 - I see you are on an Alumni Group...which side did you enter from and do you remember if there is an entrance on the Gate side (I mean where the shuttles drop you off and you walk in.

I entered from the Parking Garage side. This is covered (there is an overflow for it that is not covered), that lead to the Visitors Center (the USS Yorktown). Once in there you go through the Quarterdeck (think Lobby, though it is more than that), then a short hallway into a small area that has Navy Displays. Depending on when you arrive the line may already be starting there or as far out as the Quarterdeck.

Once you get to the front you will reach the Security Check point (have your ID ready), there was a Curio Cabinet to my right that had all of the Division Pictures in it.

We seem to remember that once we had actually stepped inside the VC that personnel called out that photos could be taken after that point...I know I will email PAO and find out,so until I do... Remember NOT to take them outside of Midway Hall, it is not permitted and your camera will be confiscated and the pics deleted...and your Sailor will get a talking too. They are "responsible" for you while on base.

The Shuttles usually drop off outside of RTC, don't know what they do in bad weather. But if they still have to drop off outside of RTC then you will have to walk into RTC, so be prepared for that.

I have Maps and will post up above in the Discussion Forum (they are public domain so pelase don't worry...).

Thanks for the update...glad to know I do not have to stand outside and try to warm my arthritic knees.

Comment by Cleaver6 on December 18, 2012 at 2:36pm

The doors open at 0630 and the ceremony begins at 0900. You don't have to wait in the cold. There are plenty of seats. You may not have a perfect seat right in front of your division, but you won't miss anything.

Got a call from my Sailor yesterday afternoon.  Sorry for not posting sooner.  Busy packing for our trip.  Driving up from Dallas, TX....I am really counting on Chicago having more scene "snow" control on their roads than we do down here.  :-)

I would like to know what to expect too as we are bringing my SR's grandmother with us. She can't stand for 2 hours in line. If we get there later to avoid standing so long, do we risk the chance of not getting a seat?
