For those of you going to PIR right before Christmas think about a visit to the NEX...they have great fun in there and some of the prices are really good especially when they are paying or are at least with you...my son got a beautiful watch within Navy guidelines that I paid for that ended up being very cheap that was water resistant, had a compass, military time and everything you could possibly imagine on it...so consider that before you buy a lot in Civilian stores they have many name brand clothes and the discounts they get in downtown Chicago are awesome as well

kona...if you read the small print...even the non-refundable tickets often will change them for a fee of 100.00 or so...which is still cheaper than the cost of a refundable plane ticket

ISH Mom: The form letter is normally received within the first 2 weeks after they leave for bc. Letter from your recruits won't be received for about 3 weeks at least because they are usually not allowed to write until after being there 2 weeks. Also, the letters you may be writing to your recruit (if you have an address from the recruiter) are held until after the first 2 weeks they are there.

Gabby: It is not that the PIR date will change, but your recruit's date could change if setback for an injury, illness, or other reason. But refundable tickets are expensive....I had to change mine when my son was there---he was setback--- (I had nonrefundable) and they were cheaper by the time I rebooked, so the $150 change fee actually was like it was only $89. It is usually cheaper to get nonrefundable and pay the change fee if necessary.

I havent received any letters yet about PIR. When are we supposed to receive them? I also booked with Amtrack train. They do not charge for cancellations as long as you havent picked up your tickets. They give Miltary and AAA discounts.

Gabby, the refundable tickets is in case our recruit doesn't graduate for whatever the reason. Kim

What is the likelihood of the PIR date changing from 12/22 to something else?
I'm wondering why we should buy refundable tickets?
The form letter was sent to my sailors father and I'm still waiting for a copy, does it say on the letter to purchase refundable tickets?

Good morning everyone. I started a 1-7-2011 PIR group for those of us who now know we are not graduating before Christmas, unless they slid in a 12/24 which is probably a 100-1 longshot. Since I don't gamble, I'm playing it safe and assuming we'll be seeing our son after the holidays. Jessica - Can you post that cool list of things to take to graduation on our new PIR site, maybe in the discussion forum? Chins up everyone, time does pass more quickly when you're having fun. I'm excited about the maturity my son is gaining through his boot camp experiences. I can't wait to get a letter or call - He left Oct. 27, so it's been almost two weeks for me.
