I know it is hard when a recruit has a small child at home. I think if you can be taking pictures along with writing...even if you don't send the pictures and you give it to them as a gift at PIR kind of chronicling each day...what they did, how they grew, it will help them...and in your letters you can tell them you are doing this so it will give them something special to look forward to

Now I know this isn't the same...but my sailor loved our dog...which is a Yorkie (although he used to tell alot of girls it was a miniature pit bull and they believed him...lol). Anyway...I would take a couple pictures and just make it a part of my letter...just copied and pasted it right in...here she is looking for you at the door or here she is sleeping on your blanket, wishing you were here...just little things like that...it gives them a sense of home...

I wrote all my letters on the computer so I could preserve them for posterity...lol..I din't know if that helps.

Also for your little children...you know you make chains at Christmas for the tree...make one of those with your kids to count down the days to PIR....then take a picture of them with the chain...taking one off so their dad or mom can see them counting down the days too....

good luck ya'll hope that helps!!

I stayed at the Candlewood Suites which was 79.00, one bedroom, pullout couch, very nice...just tell them you are there for PIR to get that rate...no shuttle though..they have a little grocery store in there...same vicinity as Springhill, Residence Inn, Chilis, Walmart....etc...

talked to "D" yesterday. He couldn't call on Sunday because he had two wisdom teeth pulled out on Friday and was on bed rest. He is looking forward to graduation on 12/22. We got our tickets but had to make some changes. Travelocity and Marriott - Residence Inn were FANTASTIC!!! I am writing them both emails of appreciation.

Hello Mary, my son has a 2 year old daughter and he misses her something fierce. I send pictures that I have uploaded to my computer. My granddaughter spends every weekend with us, so we take pictures each weekend and mail them on Mondays. Yes, it is hard for them missing their children. I close each of my letters to my son with "whatever you are doing, PT, Drill, etc..focus on who you are doing this for". I have a feeling that it makes him sad, but I keep hoping that the pictures of his daughter, gives him the strength and courage to see this through. She writes "scribbles" letter to her dada and I send them also. I am a firm believer that he understands her letters...

My husband and I are staying at the Quality Inn. We get in at 8am on 12/21. We got a great deal through my aunts travel site. Got a car, flight and hotel for just over $500 for two night stay. Our sons tickets were under $400

Does anyone elses recruit have a child. I know that is the hardest part that J is having to deal with is being away from his son, but one of the reasons he is doing it is for his son. I just keep sending encouraging words and his son keeps drawing him pictures and writing letters. He always writes " I miss you dady! Im proud of u!" So I hope those encourage him and not bring him down more. I can't wait to hear from him this week. I hope he is doing better emotionally and settled in. I was talking to a friend of mine who said when he went into bootcamp... there were people who were phsyically and mentally prepared but not emotionally prepared. He said it took a few weeks and they were ok. Just thought I'd share.

For those of you from WARMER states (like me!) who need to buy a coat for PIR, checkout jcpenney's website today. They are having a one-day blowout sale and have some beautiful coats (such as cashmere blends, etc), normally $200+, on sale for less than 1/2 price. Some are in stores too, and some just online buys.
