Susie-Sounds exciting for Gabe, you'll have to keep us posted.
Thanks for asking about Katie. We were getting weekly phone calls when she was based in Sasebo, along with e-mails quite regularly. Since they left base, I get e-mails when she can get a turn on the computer and has the time. Katie said she may call when she is in port, but not to count on it. I don't expect to hear, then it makes it even better when I do! Katie is enjoying herself and knew she probably wouldn't be coming home until next year. She used up leave time at Christmas during A-school and then the Navy sent her home for 2 weeks before going overseas. Katie did get 5 days of RAP duty by working at the Recruiter's office while she was home in April. Next summer a cousin is getting married and she hopes to be home then.

Katie became a shellback as well. They had their WOG ceremony on Wednesday (for them). They are 14 hours ahead of us as they head towards Australia.

Katie finished DC A school in April and left for Sasebo and the USS Essex April 25th for 3 years.

FYI - sub school is seven weeks, and there are lots of submarines homeported in Norfolk.

Patty,
You can get over your shame by teasing your daughter the next time she says she has Quarterdeck Watch - "oh right - receptionist duty..." it's funnier with my son tho... lol

Quarterdeck is where people come aboard a ship. At a shore command, it's basically like the lobby of a building; "Quarterdeck Watch" is kinda/sorta like a combination receptionist/security guard.

Thanks Ruthann,
My son is at sub school down in Groton most of this year, and I recently noticed that my Mariners (yea, I know - they suck) will be at Fenway the weekend of his birthday. Do you happen to know if the Sox website has a forum where season ticket holders can sell their tickets for games they don't plan to attend. I'd love to experience Fenway with my son...

Please forgive me for being a Navy lingo (or spelling) geek, but here goes... the name of the song is actually "Anchors Aweigh". When a ship hauls in the anchor, it's called "weighing anchor" - I'm hoping that the background of the song title might be interesting enough to make the correction worthwhile without coming across as a geek...dunno though - I might be a geek anyway... ;-)

They are adults now..ALL of them. Show them unconditional Love and Support and believe me they will come around...in their time.

That's a great poem Colleen, thank you for posting it. I considered sending it along to my son, but it'd probably be just too weird for him getting that from his dad. Zach (my son) was also in 030, by the way, and had very nice things to say about Paul and the role he played in the division. Best wishes to you both!
