Chris called today! Okay, so it was only for clearance information, and he called my husband's cell phone (he was home, I was at work), so I missed it.

He says most of the call sounded scripted, but he was able to say he was having fun, sort of. He didn't sound distressed, depressed or at all, which is good! Mike (hubby) was able to say a few encouraging words before Chris had to hang up.

No letter, though. I was hoping he would at least have sent the "multi-choice" letter I tucked into his wallet before he left.

Sandra, you need to call 1-800-NAVYINN to get reservations. You don't have to pay in advance, but you do need to reserve the room(s) with a credit card.

I called to check, there is free internet available at the GL Navy Lodge. They also have a "bag continental breakfast" that includes orange juice, a danish and a yogurt "to go."

Our PIR date and the divisions graduating is official now, we are listed on the NTC Great Lakes website.

Melissa, there is a train that leaves from Chicago O'Hare that goes to downtown Chicago, then another that leaves downtown Chicago that arrives very near the gates of Great Lakes itself. If the weather is too awful or if you have too much luggage, you can always take a taxi for the very short distance from the train station to the hotel. That's what my grandparents will do, they're 90 and 92 years old, they don't get around too well anymore.

Most hotels in the area have a graduation shuttle for parents staying in the hotel to get to the graduation itself. Even for those who have cars, its a better deal than trying to park on that insane day. I haven't heard anything good about the parking situation there, even with the parking pass.

Mary, we plan on doing the train and public transportation for all our transportation needs. We have few plans (and even less money) to see Chicago "attractions" so we're going to keep it very simple. Also, a car rental is $$$, a weekend bus/train pass is $5 per person. That makes the difference as to whether we can even afford to be there.

Frankly, I'm bringing my laptop computer and I figure Chris will want to spend as much in our room or at a Starbucks time catching up on his internet anime and comics as we allow.

This is about us spending time with him and getting to know the "new, improved" Chris. Time spent together on the train counts toward that time together.

We recently completed 10 years of not owning a car, using public transportation for everything in a similar climate (cold, icy, snowy, etc) , so its something we are very comfortable doing.

Is there a train from Milwaukee? This sounds like an AWESOME savings!

No, I think I'll be flying out of Portland.

We got reservations for two rooms at the Navy Lodge, $65/night, and you don't have to worry about parking for PIR, they have a shuttle.

I sent off my first letter today. I'm buying a whole bunch of touristy postcards with pictures of our area, and I will send them between letters. I just don't have enough to say to write more than a letter once or twice a week.
