Conster--there were a lot of moms struggling in other PIR groups about the cost of going to PIR (i was one of them...my husband hurt his back and hasnt worked in 4 months)..but some of the hotels in the brochure you received are very reasonable...and beleive me, the SR's dont care what kind of room you have...they just want to kick back. I reserved a hotel with a pool and he never even went to check it out. Also,,he was happy to order pizza to the room. He did want to go to the mall, but whatever he purchased,,,he paid for himself (God love him.)). We drove because it was too expensive for us to fly (there was 4 of us), and because of the weather...and it cost us less in gas than it would have cost for one plane ticket. We drove up there from PA..it took 9 hours...but it was totally worth it. We even considered leaving a day early, because of the cost...but after seeing my son, i said NO WAY...we are staying the whole weekend. How could i tell him how much i missed him and then leave a day early?? We ended up calling home and had a family member deposit money in my account to cover the hotel for another night. I hope you are able to make it,,,it is well worth it just to see how beautiful and healthy your SR looks and it gives them a much needed break from BC.

texas saolormom--there is info expaining the photo/keel/dvd orders above in the discussions forum. Click 'view all' and you will see it. You might have to go in a page or two. The photo ordering is probably the most confusing part of this ordeal.

I think they have to place an order at the time the photos are taken and have an option to pay for them then or for you to pay for them at NEX the day of PIR.

I am VERY surprised that there is no kind of foundation, to help families to go see their SR graduate. I know the MArine Corps has a foundation, where you can apply for financial assistance. With this recession/depression we are having, it would be a tremendous help to families in need, such as mine. Both my husbnad and I are SSDI, and have NOT had a cost of living increase in 3 years now. I really feel bad for all the Sailors, when there is not one family member who is there to see them graduate.

@diannep- I saw ur comment about paying for pictures after PIR, I had read somewhere that u could get the keel book in the NEX but the only way to get the picture packages was for your SR to order them ahead of time. But that's not true?

Conster- I wish there was a way for families to get help with this trip because so many could use it but I have never heard of one either. Although it is getting warmer and maybe a good old fashioned yard sale would help. That's what I did last summer to pay for my trip. :-)
Comment by diannep on February 15, 2011 at 5:05pm

Conster:  No, you should not have to pay upfront for the hotel...if you don't cancel your reservation by the time they say, they will bill you for that night...but otherwise, you will pay as you stay!

And, sorry, I don't know of a place to get help for paying for the trip.

Diannep.......do you have to pay up front for the hotel, and second, is there anywhere to get help paying for the trip?
