marmee: YAH! So happy for you and your almost-sailor! Bring on BattleStations!
HOOYAH!
dianne---you have me in tears!! I know my son told me that they were briefed on protocol for these things to happen. He said that they told the Sailors that if someone wants to pay for their meal, give up their seat on a plane to them, etc...they are to decline ONCE and if the person insists...then they are to accept. This has already happened to my son.
He left BC and was in Chicago airport going thru security on his way to Groton, when an elderly man struck up a conversation with him. When he finished with security...he heard a mans voice saying "Sailor..Sailor". He said he turned around it was the same man form the security line. He then said the man thanked him for his service, told him how brave he is in joining at such a young age, and then told him that he reminded him of himself when he was that age. The man then told him that he was the Police Chief in Chicago for 45 years, and is long retired..but had gone thru the Police Academy at the same age as my son. He the asked my son if he would accept his Chief "coin" that he has always carried with him. He told him that he didnt have anyone to pass it down too, and would appreciate if my son would accept it!! Of course my son said yes, and told him it will remain in good hands.!! Can you believe it!!?? This happened to my son right out of the gate from bootcamp.! It is so emotional for me. The pride is so unbelievable. To see them in their uniform, and all the respect they receive is very moving.
Diannep ~ thanks for sharing that is wonderful.
This is a little long, but for those who missed it in last Sunday's paper, I thought you might enjoy reading it while waiting for those first I'm A Sailor calls...which should start coming in another hour or so:
"Dear Abby: I'm the mother of a US Navy sailor who has been the recipient of random act of kindness from complete strangers. I was most affected personally when a woman stopped us in a large parking garage in Chicago to say, "Thank you for your service, young man." And there was a stranger who paid for my son's meal in an airport when he had a layover on his way home for Chirstmas. Another time, we were in a line to see a movie and the attendant waved us to the front of the line--and everyone smiled about it.
Whenever my son goes anywhere in his uniform, he's stopped by people who just want to say thank you. I'm amazed and thrilled. Part of the reason I am so touched is I was a teenager living in San Diego during the Vietnam era. At that time, young people in the military were cursed and reviled. It was a shameful time in our history when people serving their country could not be proud of their service. Today, I am proud of my son, and he is able to be proud of himself and his decision to enlist in the Navy.
Thank you to all you folks who show your gratitude to our service members by the little things you do. You not only touch that person, but their extended family as well. "Proud Mom in Overland Prk, KS"
Doesn't that just want to make you go....AHHHHHH!?? That will be your SRs/sailors' experience a week from today. You will experience this on PIR day most anywhere you go up there. It sure put a smile on my son's face when he experienced a compliment while at lunch with us after PIR.
Thanks for the RED FRIDAY reminder. I will proudly wear red and tell people why.
