@ annamichael:  our son left 1/4/11 and did not have first check deposited till 2/15.  The first 2 checks were much smaller than this last one was.

When they tell them during bootcamp your A-school is "so many days" and your graduation date is "00/00" Those are almost never right. Once they arrive at A-school they have to do other things before A-school classes actually begin. They have in-doc (lots and lots of paperwork) They have what is called ATT classes (they learn all the rules for the base and they have finance class and why you shouldn't get married (lol) class and a whole lot of other stuff they need to learn. Those usually take a week or maybe 2. Then some of them, depending on their rate (job) may have AWAT classes. After all that is finished then they start the actual A-school classes. Some will have C-school and some will not. It depends on what job they will be doing but it can also depend on where they are doing it. Example: For an AO: Pensacola ATT Class, AWAT class then A-school classes. near the end of those classes they get to pick if they want to be attached to a ship, squadron/hanger. If they pick ship duty they stay in Pensacola for a couple more weeks and have a class that is called Strand, it teachs specifics about the job they will do on the ship and about living on the ship. If they pick squadron they go to C-school in either VA Beach or CA. C-school is only about a month and then they go to wherever their squadron is. It could be at the same base, in another state, in another country, or deployed with a ship. My daughter chose to be attached to a squadron and her squadron is attached to the Harry S Truman. So when the Truman is deployed her squadron usually goes with them. She normally lives near the base but when deployed lives on the ship. So, there are a lot of different things that they learn, different classes, and they have to class up before regular A-school classes can start.

I would go on the cruise. I bet he will be at least a little longer than they expect.

Diannep: thank you for the very helpful information. You know I first learned about C school but had no idea there was such a thing. He did not mention C school...so can you fill me in on why a sailor might do C school? He did say he almost was given his orders verbally the other day.  So there could  be a chance that even though we count 7 weeks of A school, that might not be the date he actually leaves?  My husband and I have a cruise planned for our 25th anniversary, but it lands right at the 7 weeks. We thought he would  be at least 10 weeks.  We do not want to miss him but hate to change plans and then do not do cruise and do not get to see him until weeks later.  Thank you for your wishes.

I have been checking my boyfriend's account almost every day since he left for BC and nothing yet. When will they get paid?

(and no, I'm not asking so I can take his moolah..haha)

lbmom2navy:  Does he have C School too or just A School?  If just A School, then he should receive his duty station orders before he is released from A School base. What they normally do is give them a plane ticket from A School to their duty station.  They then can change it to fly home and from there and then to duty station, but for a $30 charge (first change...if he changes it again, the airlines change fee applies) and he will have to pay the difference in fare.  My son's orders took a long time to come down the pike because someone was on vacation during that time, backing things up a bit...he was "held" at A School for about 4 weeks after he finished along with many of his buddies.  But that doesn't always happen....you just never know.

So he will be given "verbal" orders for his duty station before the "written" orders are delivered.  He may even know before he finishes A School where he will be stationed...some of them do, others not until after they graduate.

Glad your surgery went well and you are recovering nicely!
