Let me try this again as my keyboard keeps sticking...
Sorry to hear about your daughter's mail, Chris. I'm hoping my son has gotten at least some of his by now. Not knowing is sooooo tough! Keep the faith! My son's first letter was not long and offered little in the way of specifics! Typical 19 yr old boy. I'm hoping the next one is a little more positive and a little more detailed! For me - I just hate that every time the phone rings I get a knot in my stomach. I would love to talk to him - BUT I know that no calls are a good sign in a lot of ways...I guess this is a test for all of us!!

Thanks, Christie..almost 3 weeks down already ;).

Congrats to your hubby, Christie. I know that my Chris will struggle a bit more than some. he has never been really athletically inclined and really had to work to pass the PFA before he left. He' 19 and a recent HS grad. I know he can do it...if he just puhed through - but I am hoping some of the more mature recruits will help him along and recognize how hard he tries and what a really good person he is. He will be a great addition to the Navy - if he just survives boot camp!!

Hi Cathy..
My Chris's first letter was heartbreaking for me. I got it last Friday and he said that he hated it - had blisters, got glasses, was over tired and just wanted to come home and see us. He also said he knew he'd never make it 8 wks. I cried A LOT. BUT, i have alot of Navy friends and military friends and they all swear THAT is normal. Talked to his recruiters (who by the way are terrific). His Chief recruiter said he was certain with all the work Chris did and his attitude that he'd make it. He said week 1 - they all feel like that (even if they don't say it). If he were going to have a melt down Chief thought it would've already happened and I would've gotten a call. No call = everything is OK. I feel your pain! Hang in there - we all have each other. I keep writing Chris and reminding him how much he already has invested and put behind him - AND that Navy life is not Basic training!! Hang in there!!

Cathy, try not to worry. I am still waiting for my letter and I am sure it will read the same, but my cousin was Navy for 9yrs and was discharged for Crohn's disease or he would still be there. He said that everyone feels that way in boot camp and then they end up loving it. I hang on to that. When I got my Navy form letter the first week Blake had written a couple of lines at the end, saying" I wish this was over, give my love to everyone, Blake." It broke my heart. He left 2wks ago yesterday and has never been away from home this long and I have never gone more than 2days without talking with him. I will pray for Chris. Take Care-Jodi

I have heard that it is not uncommon for recruits to get 6 or seven letters at once. In talking to some people whose kids or hubbies have already graduated - mail call is the thing ALL the recruits look forward to. I can tell you that I have a young man who worked for me and who ended up staying with my partner and I before he left for RTC for several weeks- (he is like a little )and has told me LOTS over the last week. The first letters he got were actually the end of week two - so for most of us in this group our guys and gals should be getting them this week - I would imagine - if they haven't already. Mike also said that week one is HORRIBLE - week two pretty awful for the most part - but by the time week three gets going things start to get progressively better. Mail he said, is a huge pick me up! He also said (as he was 24 when he went in) that it seems as a rule that the older recruits tend to be a little more resilient than the younger ones. They have more life experience and don't personalize the RDCs as much. He DID say that the team mentality starts to kick in week 3 and by week 4 it is really evident. I, like many of the moms and wives - am having a bit of a tough time...worrying. BUT..I have to believe that these are great young people and that they will pull together to insure each other's success....This site is definitely helpful.

Followup -- That is why we should be numbering out letters to them, becuase they probably only have 1 Mail Call a week. Of course, I am still writing him 2-3x a week! Moms are mushy....

Hey, this is cool! My son is a nuke in Div 916. Anybody else from Texas? I also think the countdown clock is great. I can imagine our loved ones are doing this in their heads... As to the mail, I think they can only write and receive mail when they have "holiday routine", which is Sundays or days like MLK day. So basically our loved ones will probably not have another holiday routine, unless they give them President's Day or Valentine's Day.
