@Diannep Thank you !! @ Ochaos Thank you for the update my daughter will be going to A school in Great Lakes.

Recruit Training Command has changed the departure procedures for Sailors being sent to A School. For recruits going to A School in Great Lakes; they will check in immediately following graduation where they will follow the schools policy on liberty. Sailors not staying at Great Lakes will fly out on Saturday depending on flight availability. For those few that do not fly out on Saturday, they will fly out on Sunday.

Ship 9 Div 189

Hi I`m new to this site! I finally got a letter from my daughter yesterday, does anyone know when the recruits can make phone calls?

Comment by Meruhnavywife on April 23, 2011 at 9:31am

@diannep: thats actually one of the toughest things about being an RDC, a TI, a drill instructor, etc. If it is raining, snowing, freezing cold, hellishly hot, they are out there with them pushing them to do their best. I have a friend who was recommended for Drill Instructor several times and refused; she has knee problems.

@Carola: as far as I know, no mail or calls from 02/929 either other than security perhaps. I said it before, but it's really true. I look in the mailbox and go, "ooh mail!" and then find five bills :(

@Parrotdhgal: they'll be able to hug their child and maybe hold them for a little bit directly after graduation, but if you're out and about walking around or eating out, they really are not supposed to be the primary one holding their child. And they have to stay in uniform whatever they do, wherever they go. This is something that continues throughout their military career; there are things that are considered "un-military" to do while in uniform, there are things they can't do at all, and there are things they shouldn't do while in uniform.

ex: spouses need to walk on their left hand side, in case they need to salute. likewise, if they HAVE to be holding something, it should be on the left side for the same reason, including purses for women.

In general, PDA is not allowed unless at homecomings/goodbyes (or in this case graduation), which is why they are not supposed to kiss in uniform, hold hands, or hold children unless necessary.

Once your sailor hits Phase II of a-school, they are allowed to wear civilian clothes while in public off base, and these rules don't apply. As long as they don't do anything dumb, they'll hit phase II relatively quickly, and they will stay with phase II instead of being knocked back.
