Let's help those who are coming to PIR by themselves find each other so that no one is traveling alone from the airport to Great Lakes.

Clandy, I remember reading somewhere that there are stores all around like Wal-Mart, and 24 hours drug stores where you could quickly purchase some things...and most hotels provide shampoos and soaps and lotions -- just ask for more! :-)

No letter last week for us. And besides the "I'm here" and 21-day calls, we haven't gotten any calls either.

Clandy26 - I think they must be very exhausted and very busy right now.

You can bring a certain amount of liquid stuffs; they just have to be travel size & all of it fit in 1 quart bag. Even aerosol hair spray is okay if its the small size. A lot of the travel size stuff is marked airline approved (or something like that) & most hotels have shampoo, etc. That way you don't have to wait for your luggage & can get to the M&G. How long do you plan to stay at GL?

No phone calls here. Still waiting hoping we'll get one this week. The meet and greet sounds like it's coming along well. :) Thanks for doing that MV! I'm trying to decide to do carry on or just checking in. I don't want to waste any of the time with my hubby by having to go buy all the liquid stuff I need. What is everyone's thoughts? I don't get in till 5:30pm on Thursday and I would like to go to the meet and greet. Don't know what to do. FIngers crossed for a letter going to check the mail.

You got a letter? Oh how nice. Did anyone get a phone call this weekend? I'm starting to think that my son has a girlfriend or something because he never calls dear old mom. Anyway, so they are grad n go and we can give them stuff at the airport? That will be helpful. Even if it is in the middle of the night!

Just got a letter and my son confirmed that he is Grad & Go. He says he'll leave for the airport (Charleston) at 2 or 3am Sat. morning. (anybody want to meet at the USO to pass off laptops & cell phones to our new "sailors?") He says that Hell Week is demanding, up at 4am, tons of classes, inspections,& tests.....tiring......doing well though. He also says to keep sending letters (as all of the other moms have said!) and little funny things happen and he'll tell all of us about it at PIR! He says it's busy...but "good-busy." So that's all I can add from my son's Ship 07, Div 201. Please post what you guys here! It helps!

therightthing, another good point! I got the evil eye right after that went into effect because I had a 4oz, half empty, bottle of lotion. They REALLY mean 3 oz size bottle! The last time I flew you could take on any drinks that were purchased past the security scanners. Oh, and here's another tip which may seem like a "no brainer" ...don't even joke about weapons or terrorists. That will guarantee that you will be searched and may miss your flight and possibly PIR.

KathyJeanba...very helpful! Also...don't carry on any liquid/cream/paste that is more than a 3oz. container. If you do have 3 oz containers, put them in a visible quart-size bag, and pull the quart size bag out of your carry on while scanning.

Good morning all,
MV-Boone, good luck with the M-N-G plans. Contatct the Ramada folks. I'm sure they have this even down to a system. My brother is an events director for a large hotel chain so I know that the staff will be more than helpful. Their ad in the MWR brochure indicates "comlimentary RTC meet 'n greet." They may just want to know that there is interest in our PIR group. When you think about how many recruits are in the PIR pictures and video clips that we've seen our N4Ms group seems to be a small part of the friends and family that will be attending.
Does anybody remember how many recruits PIR per ceremony?
For those who have never flown or for those of you that haven't for a while remember to get to the airport early, find out what you can not carry on, wear comfortable shoes that are easy to take off and put back on (you will need to do that to get thru security), be patient (can't stress that enough), always be friendly to the security staff even if they're not friendly to you (depending on what's going on in the world these folks have a stressful job and deal with a lot of odd situations. I like to see if I can get them to smile ;-] ) Another important thing, don't pack anything in your carry on that looks suspicious...after my dad's funeral my mother wrapped a framed photo of him in brown paper and tied it with twine, she put a rose from his casket in a paper towel tube. When my carry on went thru the x-ray scanner it brought the line to a halt while they brought in someone to hand search it and did an indvidual search of me. Also be prepared to lose anything that is on the list of items not allowed to go on the plane. Take something to read or otherwise help you pass the time in the event of delayed flights. Also airport food is expensive, you might want to pack snacks. I fly fairly often and in spite of everything I love it. It's a hassel these days but if you're prepared for what might happen it will make your experience so much better. For the moms with little ones you can take your stroller up to the gate. It will be tagged and the ground crew will put it in cargo, then have it waiting in the jetway when you get off the plane. So all that being said, we're driving! My husband loves to drive and drives to Bloomington, IL occasionally for
his job. Since it's about a 10 hour drive I'm not sure that I'll be at the meet n greet but I hope we can meet all of you, even if breifly, before or after the ceremony. I understand that the recruits that are staying at GL will have to process to their new ship (David is one of those) so we may have some time to visit while we wait for them.

Whoops! One other thing -- when you get to the PIR page from clicking on the "3," you will then need to click on the PIR event title (it's underlined) to be actually taken to another page where you can click your RSVP, see the event details, and info...hope this helps! :-)
