The mailman brought a second letter from my son yesterday, dated 7/11, telling me that he hasn't got any mail yet and wanted to know what was going on in the outside world. He said they sleep from 10pm to 6am but he's still tired. I found out from his best friend that he's been sick, but he didn't tell me that. He's probably worried I will show up there and try to put Vicks on him. :) He also said that he had too much to do so he couldn't go to church, they must be keeping them busy. Still not a lot of details, I think I'm going to have to print out some of those questionnaires to send to him.

SailorsSweetheart: There is no mail call on Sundays. But you are right...there is on the other 6 days. I try to post in the DEP groups to tell the recruits that mail will be held for 2 weeks after getting there. SO sad when a recruit thinks no one is writing.

Someone posted on the PIR 8/27 site that you can googleearth where your recruit is (if you have his/her address) and see the buildings, etc. She put a link on her post so you can go there and click. She posted it yesterday.

Samantha: He will get a ton of your letters at one time...and feel like a million dollars then!

Bessie: Welcome! Also, N4M's just was started in March 2008. And aren't we glad that the Navy did that! This site is wonderful and has been such a help to me also!

Ok, Susan and Sailor's Sweetheart: My son was there for 9.5 weeks, one week of that being when he was set back. So he was there for 8.5 weeks. He had about 10 days of processing, so take that out of the equation, and his actual boot camp was about 7 weeks...maybe a little less because Christmas and New Years Day were in there---no training on those days. Hope this helps!

SamanthaH - The good news is that they do mail call every single evening, if they have earned it, which they "usually" do, I think :) They only get to mail out on Sunday's but they get mail every day. So, once he starts getting your mail he will see that you have been writing him as much as you have. I feel you on the "helpless" emotion. There have been SO many times that I have just wanted to pick up the phone and call. I have even thought of going to Great Lakes a couple weeks early so that I can feel close to my Sailor and maybe even see him (I have an uncle in Chicago) but I quickly realized that I couldn't even get on base if I tried :) The most powerful thing that we can do from so far away and with limited contact is write TONS of letters and say our prayers! And of course, become addicted to NavyforMoms, haha! This site(and the ladies on it) has honestly helped me SO much!!!

SailorsSweetheart - My heart broke too when he said that! I really cried because I feel so helpless. I don't want him to think I'm not writing him! I really hope he got them yesterday or today! It's been a little over 2 weeks since he has been there. I can't believe they make them earn their mail! I knew them made them earn their phone calls home but I didn't know about the mail!! I just really hope he gets my letters soon. It's killing me knowing how sad he was that some guys around him got letters but he didn't. He said "please write me and feel free to write and send as often as you can" and I'm sitting there saying I am and I have been everyday!!

SamanthaH - I totally know how you feel. I had been mailing letters about every other day or so at first and my Sailor just started recieved them too. In one of his letters that he wrote before he got any of my letters he said "Please write me letters. I really want letters. Can you pass out my address to everyone, even carry it in your purse so that you can give it out to everyone we know. And, please please please write me letters." My heart broke!!! He was probably thinking that I just decided to not write him :( When I got that letter I started mailing a letter or a card every single day. I think he is finally getting them now. Aparently, it takes about ten days for our letters to get into thier hands and even at that, they hold the mail for the entire fist two weeks anyways. On top of that, they have to EARN thier mail, he told me that in one of his letters. He said in one letter "Our RDC's said they have our mail and if we do really well we might be able to earn it tomorrow." It seems like the mail is used as an incentive for the recruits to perform well.

Got 2 letters from Brad this week! I was so happy to hear from him! I have been sending him letters everyday and so far he has said he hasn't gotten any of them! I feel so bad that he has yet to receive them. He seems to be doing well but misses home. You could tell he is dying to get our letters. So far he has passed all of his tests but is worried about the memorization. He is excited they eat well and is nervous to get his wisdom teeth out!

Welcome to the group Bessie :) My fiance is in div 283. You will find that there are many on here who also have Sailor's in Div 284, like your son. Glad to have you!

Wow :) I love this site. I have learned so much in the short time I have been lurking. Army wife of 22yrs.. LOL I sure did not have this during hubbys basic training. Son is Ship 07 Div 284. Any other moms with kids with the same ship and division? Have recieved two letters so far. He misses us, the dogs, and his video games :) And FOOD. If anyone knows of a good place to get corned beef or pastrami in the area please let me know. Do they get a phone call possibly this weekend?

Susan - maybe someone like Sobe, Diannep, or Angie-Hoppie will know. They seem to be FULL of good information. I am going to hope that they read this and can maybe explain it :)

About the whole 1:1 day... I just looked at a calendar and noticed that if 7/6 was 1:1 for div 283... there are only 6 and 1/2 weeks from 7/6 until PIR (yay!)... I though boot camp was 8 weeks. It seems now like the actual "boot camp" laborous days are only about 6 weeks long instead of 8?? Any insight would be greatly appreciated :)
