Hi All,

I've been through this recently with my younger son and I have a few tips re: graduation day that I wish someone had passed along to me! This time around with my older son I plan to be a little wiser! So, here they are:

After graduation you can go down on the floor and find them but then they have to go back to their ship and be officially "released" - with Dean's group they said the process could take up to a couple of hours. So we were like, "what the heck do we do for 2 hours? And where do we meet Dean when he's released (which we forgot to do) and him with no cell phone!?" So the process actually took about 20 min and somehow through sheer luck we found each other by the Commissary amongst the 5 bajillion people looking for each other. Point being- arrange a meeting spot beforehand! Also, tell him not to move when people swarm the floor, that you will find him: each group has a banner w/ their ship/division on it so you know where to aim. Remind him not to lock his knees too- I think there were at least 4 people who fainted during the ceremony. (Dean said he considered faking it, just to get out of there but decided it would be too embarrassing- remember, they will have been lined up at attention for hours and hours before graduation even starts.)

So, hope this is all helpful!

This is helpful, at least I know to write to him now, to stay where is and we will come to him. In the commissary, how big is it, and is there something you could let me know that would be a good place to meet. Is there numerous restrooms, a clock on one wall? It seems like it is a giant hall. Thank you.
Well, the graduation hall IS huge, but when you consider there are 500 (maybe more?) identically dressed graduates, each with 4 or more family members all swarming the floor at one time; well, it is chaos! During the ceremony, mark where your son's ship/division is and head straight there. This at least gives you the general direction of where he will be, which is why it's so important to tell them to stay where they are! After 20 minutes or so they'll have to leave you to go check out of the ships. The Commissary (The Navy store) is a good landmark to meet after they are released from their ships (of course they know where it is and anyone will be able to direct you). Just specify inside or outside, right or left of the entrance, etc. because it's where most families and sailors choose to meet back up. Hope this helps!
Hi Kyles mom, thank you for your graduation information! This is very helpful. I am making a list of things to ask my son on his next call which hopefully will be next week. I also write him almost every day. Thank you again.
Thanks!!!!
Thanks shapidr!! I never thought about pre-arranging a meeting spot, but that's a great idea! It's going to be chaos for sure, but I'm so excited :D
I agree, thank you very much for this info. I wrote my son last night and told him to stay on the floor and we will come to him. I also asked him to pick a spot because, like you said, there are so many people. I can find someone to direct me to where he has told me.
Thank you so much for the great advice. I am putting it all in my next letter.
Thanks so much for the great information..I really appreciate it....Patty B.
Thanks to all of the N4M, you have all made this so much easier. Especially since my Danny is not a letter writer. Thank you for the advice, I didn't think of telling him a pre-meeting spot. Great Idea. Hope to meet you all or some at graduation. If not, once again MANY THANKS!!!
Update on having to be released from their ship after graduation and meeting families on the floor. This is ONLY required for sailors that are assigned to A-school at Great Lakes; my mistake in the earlier e-mail since Dean was assigned to school at Great Lakes, I assumed all the sailors had to do it. I was just reading the graduation information section on the Recruit Training Command website and realized the error. Also, parking passes can be printed now! You'll need one to get on the base. Less than 5 days!!!
Thanks for info. -
